Just do it.
Hi, I've just bought a super GSN on ebay and am waiting for a new battery/adaptor. In the meantime can I use the camera manually on the flash setting and if so does anyone know its sync speed?
Cheers

Thanks for info. much appreciated.

you don't really need a special battery adapter for your GSN.. I picked up a 4LR44 battery from Radio Shack, and with a small wad of aluminum foil, my GSN is running smoothly

I think the flash setting on the GS and GSN were originally intended for flashbulbs, which are sensitive to shutter speed. Electronic flash shold work at any speed the camera chooses to set for you.

Ok, so with the battery in the GSN can synch at any shutter speed and there is no need to set it to the flash setting. However without a battery the flash setting will give me a shutter speed of 1/30sec (this is the synch speed I was wondering about).

I think that without a battery the GSN will fire at 1/500 no matter what you do. If you have a battery installed, the flash setting will be 1/30.

I think that CleverName has it right. It's my understanding that a battery is needed to keep the shutter open longer than 1/500s due to the electromagnet controlling the shutter.

Thanks - that makes sense. Might put a film through tomorrow and assume 1/500sec shutter speed and set the aperture manually using readings from hand held light meter. What's it going to hurt?

I suspect that the flash setting is instead to prevent the shutter remaining open for more than 1/30 when using flash, which it's fully capable of in auto, out to several minutes, I believe.
