GTN escapades (impressions on a GTN)

I bought a Yashica GTN a few weeks ago from a flea market, cough, I mean antiques shop. It was covered in filth and very dirty, but the inside was clean and the lens was covered by a filter. I decided to take a chance...

One camera clean and new battery later, I popped a film in and went snapping.


I must confess that I was thrilled to be using such a fast bit of glass. I only hoped that the electronics were still working so the shutter was alright; and that the lens was okay. In operation, I found it to be superb. I really enjoy aperture priority so I can focus, choose my depth of field and fire the shutter.

It's a big camera (we all know that), but steady to handle. A lot of the pictures below were taken very early in the morning. The SLR I also used didn't produce such good pictures which may be due to the glass (though I had a 1.8 lens), but I feel is more due to mirror slap. Using a smooth rangefinder like the GTN really helped me steady the camera for better pictures.

For £5.00 plus battery costs, I am really pleased with this camera!

id say you got yourself a real deal there. 5 pounds?!

im also a new GTN owner and have found it to be quite a nice kit, time will tell if the size proves to be a deterrant for me.

Congrats on the recent purchase. I have a GTN that I use almost daily.

Lost, Alone, Empty, Thinkers, Bob and Linda, King, Bike Repair, and 39C are all taken with the GTN.

I found mine online for about $40CAD many years ago and it has worked great for me. I recently dusted it off and started shooting film again after going digital for a spell.

Over the years I've owned a variety of the G*N line, and every one of them was a good performer. It is truly one of the best "values" out there. (but these days, when I'm not carrying my M2 I carry an XA, and I must admit I like it's size and portablilty better than the G*N).

The Electro's "magical" metering is hard to fool, as your pix demonstrate, and they are "spooky" silent, 🙂 and the T's have a superior attitude. 😀

Yeah, it's a really nice camera. I can see it becoming one of my regular shooters. Shame it isn't the size of an XA, but try to imagine that lens on one of those tiny bodies!

You may wanna look into the Electro 35 CC (aka CCN for EU users). It's a 35mm lens, f1.8. Same, if not better, quality lens, but a truly tiny range finder for easy portability 😉

I own two of them and they are really damn awesome! Extremely compact for a RF.
