I am also surprised by the predominance of posed, stylised, straight to camera portraits amongst the shortlist - cold, awkward and alienating.
For me, they represent a much less powerful portrait of humanity than many of the more spontaneous images posted here or on similar communities on the internet.
Thanks, mildly thought-provoking in lots of ways. Several had suffered trauma or deformity. Some pictures rather obviously challenging the definition of what a portrait is (surprised there wasn't actually a picture with absolutely no human in it, but maybe that's been done). A lot were surprisingly cliched. Some needed a good crop 🙂. A few that seemed little more than family snaps.
