guess what i got in the mail today!?

Are you being charged Customs fees, or some sort of excise Tax? Coming into the US, the first $400 is duty free from Canada. I bought ~$300 of camera accessories from a private seller in Hong Kong and paid a "whopping" $17 of customs and brokerage fees to Fedex. They delivered the package and sent a bill. Seemed reasonable.

UPS is generally more expensive than USPS. I quit using them (UPS) entirely as I ship few packages. UPS will pick up from your home, USPS charges a pickup fee. Lines at the USPS can be absurd, but we have a small one-man Post Office at work.

The Recipient is generally responsible for paying Tax and Customs on an item. Otherwise no seller would do overseas business.

Just got my Bessa R from Cameraquest via USPS and paid $11.34 it taxes (PST, GST). The rule is the cheaper the shipping method the less chance Canada Customs will want to inspect the package. If you ship Express or use one of the UPS, FedEx, DHL, you will get nailed by Canada Customs 100% of the time.
I got tons of stuff shipped from US to Canada and my Bessa package was the first one to be charged taxes. Now, on a $249US deal, $11.34CAD in taxes is a damn good deal if you ask me.

Regards,
Doug.

i don't have the bill here at work but...there are 2 taxes, one for each service they provided, there are the 2 services, one was shipping prep or something like that and customs something or other.
in total there were about 9 lines each with a number attached.

Since you didn't sign for it, and you didn't even except the package, it was just left, how can you be assumed to have agreed to any charges? Maybe If you try and ship through them, they won't accept it unless you pay up. (can they refuse to deliver to you?)

nick, i like the way you think!

i do not plan on ever using the to ship or buying from anyone who uses them.

i usually read all the shipping info and i either missed it for this sale or they never included it in the ad.

i naver signed a thing, the package was left by the door.
