Guess What I Saw Today

Today and tomorrow Warrensburg (pop. 3500) holds "The worlds biggest garage sale". Originally created to let the inhabitants get rid of their unwanted items, it has become an event dominated by professional flea market vendors who take over the entire town and draw over 100,000 visitors per day. Local residents also participate with lawn sales. Usually many of the visitors carry cameras, but today I only saw one person with a camera, a gent with a Bessa T.His lens was capped but seemed to be an FSU Industar 61.
I was carrying an Afa Super Solina with a Canon point and shoot on my belt. I must say I was very pleasantly surprised.

It's always nice to see people with 'real' cameras 🙂

I was on the train back the other day, and someone had a small lowepro bag. he sat opposite me in the carriage. I chatted to him and eventually asked what camera he had with him (as lowepro is obvious to another camera user), he said 'only a digital thing' to which I replied "not a rangefinder then?", 'no. you need good eyesight for rangefinders'. It was nice someone being genuine and pleasant.
 
This is a little different but I was out with a kodak 3a 122 folding camera that I modified to use 120 film in a old chinese town and got a lot of lookers and questions about my 99 year old trinket, especially by passing photographers
 
Only in Germany did one of my Leicas attract some greedy looks from a guy in a museum. Otherwise, in Chicago, at least, I go pretty much unnoticed. Only once did I see a guy with a Leica, photographing Millenium Park. It turned out to be Ken Tanaka, assiduous contributor of the Leica-sponsored International Users' Forum.
 
my yashicamat attracts stares and gaping mouths.also my zorki with collapsible summitar lens made a pretty girl say "oh my god it's a film camera". I took her pic obviously.
 
I attended a friend's wedding in New York City last month at which the hired photographer used a Bessa R and CV 35/2.5. She did not use flash or appear change lenses during the ceremony or the reception.

Naturally, I had to complement her on her style and choice of tools. 🙂
 
two weekends ago, I attended my girlfriend's family get-together.. I took along my CL with a couple lenses.. I was sitting with her brother-in-law when I pulled out the camera for a few candid shots.. he gave it a quick look and said "ah, it's nice to see a rangefinder again".. we had a long discussion about the various Rolleis, Leicas, Contax and viewcameras we've both used.. which reminded me how rare it is to find someone with the same sort of equipment experience
