Guess who is going to be on the road without internet access until the end of next week. That's right - me. So anybody who would like to start a thread with a reply to this message, you are more than welcome. And when I finally get back home, I'll check in to view the sheer brilliance of the forum's thread.

Enjoy your trip to Australia Bill. Our internet is so slow your plane will have arrived back home before your posts to this board!

I was without internet for three days about six months ago (also no phone service or TV cable). It was the most relaxing three days for me in 15 years. So enjoy it, and have a safe trip.

EDIT: that might be a good subject for a post when you return.

The average millennial would need mental health treatment after about 24 hours of no net. When we had a fiber outage a few years back, one news story ran with a young professional women saying, "It's like the end of the world". It was pointed out to her that her office had electricity, water, the toilets worked, and the restaurant across the street was open for business. It didn't matter, she was beside herself, no one in the office could get on the web. They didn't know what to do.

We're doomed ..

24 hours. Come on. None of them could last that long.

How about this for a Thread

How about this for a Thread

What (presumably Fuji) gear would Bill Pierce likely pack on his week-long trip to Australia?

How do you know he went to Australia? He may have gone to PR, or one of the US cities still rebuilding after storm damage. There is much infrastructure repair to be done before new fiber can be laid or repaired.

Thank you for calling my attention to this error. I read this above too quickly and missed the point intended....my bad. I amend that to read- week-long trip abroad, on the road and without internet access, but presumably with camera gear. It is fodder for a thread, and he did suggest anyone reading his post would be "more than welcome" to initiate one.

"abroad"?

I have no idea where Bill is or was sent.. but..

This is weeks old, but just one of the storms:

"But in areas where Irma made landfall, such as the US Virgin Islands of St. John and St. Thomas in the Caribbean and the Florida Keys, restoring service has been much slower. As of Thursday, 90 percent of cell service on the island of St. John was still out. And in Monroe County, Florida, which includes the Keys, about 77 percent of cell sites were still not functioning, according to the FCC's report. More than 80 percent of cell sites were not functioning on Monday."

Makes you wonder, what would a modern, Fuji-shooting PJ do when he has the shot of a lifetime and needs to get it to the editing desk asap?

Do satellite phones have the option to at least send e-mail with attachments?
Or should our PJ really saddle a horse and get the heck back to civilisation before sending the file?

I can't remember the last time that I didn't have internet access of some kind, even on overseas trips to industrial parts of China in 2007. If home internet flakes out there is always mobile internet. It's a bit scary, really.

Tomorrow I get on a plane, bound interstate. There will be mobile data until I get on the plane, then WiFi at the hotel. Every morning, I check my emails and messages before I'm even out of bed, and I swear that my attention span is about as long as an ant's willy these days. Any time I want to know something, I'm on Google on my phone. It's boon and bane.

I'm not sure how I would handle it if I didn't have internet. As long as there were no pressing issues and people could still communicate with me via phone, I'm sure I'd get used to it after a bit. But I also communicate with family and friends overseas via the internet. Ugh, I can't contemplate it!

Happy journeys to Bill, and may he have some good stories upon his return.
