Looks great. I expected it would be a bit bigger. The APS-C size sensor puts a practical limit on how small zoom lenses can be, even with the designers having the freedom of no set flange-sensor distance. Think about the Sony R-1, brighter by a half-stop at the wide end, it was a pretty big lens. This looks about the same to me as the Sony Nex 18-50.
The Sony 16mp sensor makes the slower speed of the lens a little easier to take.
Not sure if I'll get this, but I'm happy to see the system expand. I'm really looking forward to the A16 M mount module, and the Luigi case for the GXR with M mount.
I had the nex 5n for a while and there's a LOT to like about it. But there were a few things about the GXR that brought me back to it. Like a grip, built-in intervalometer, built-in flash, hot shoe...
And nice to see that the ugly design syndrome hasn't spread from Pentax to Daddy Ricoh.

Price wise http://dc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/news/20120202_509349.html says around 60,000JPY = 790USD (according to google). However the 50mm A12 was originally announced at 70,000JPY.. hm.. that darned JPYUSD currency rate.

Nothing official on price yet but according to this site they expect it to be between $500-$600.

I just wish there was a fast normal pancake lens the size of the 28. I had the 50 macro, liked the results but disliked the size for my uses (I hardly ever used the macro function). I sold it recently expecting to replace it with the new zoom but now I'm not sure. It looks quite a bit bigger than the 50 (55mm filter thread!) but at least it's flexible.

On a bit of a side note, when will we get a new body?

What is in the body that needs updating? I thought all the goodies were in the lens/sensor units?

built in high-resolution EVF. that would be all I'd ask for

What he said. The EVF is getting kind of outdated. For that matter, the lcd could probably get an upgrade at the same time.built in high-resolution EVF. that would be all I'd ask for![]()

Tiltable LCD and touch screen function a la the 5N would be my priority. Those two features are very helpful. The touch screen isn't for menus, but for focus magnification. It's really quite brilliant, just tap on the screen where you want to focus, it magnifies it so you can nail it, half-press the shutter button to go back to full-screen view.

focus and recompose does it for me. I did not get the hang of the touchscreen on the 5N and after a few weeks, disabled it.

Focus and recompose works fine enough. The touch screen is just a bit nicer. I adapted to it very quickly, though with gloves on I had to use the tip of my nose to chose the zoomed in point. Not as precise as a fingertip.

I am excited for this new module. I won't buy it but it looks interesting at least.
For a new body:
Phase detect AF or passive/active focusing.
Built in EVF

Update on the price tag:
Found it available for pre-order at digicame-online.jp at 53800JPY (suggesting somewhere around 700USD)... would still have wished they released a new body and/or firmware instead.

Next to Olympus, Ricoh is a company that I have high hopes for innovative cameras.
Is that 24-85mm equivalent to film frame or do I need to x 1.5 to get the effective focal length? I hope it's the former.
I join the chorus that asks when will the built-in EVF body be offered? after that, a full frame module.

Sorry for hijacking this thread but I just noticed that B&H Photo Video no longer lists the A12 M-mount module. Is that a hint that Ricoh is about to replace it with a 16MP unit?
