As with all things ergonomic, what works for me may not work for you. I will tell you how I like it for myself: it works well for me. I use it in conjunction with the M8 grip and it allows me to do handheld shots like the one above (1/8 sec). If you are shooting film and find yourself automatically slipping your right thumb under the cocking lever, then the TU will be a benefit to you.

The only question becomes which model TU to use? I use a Model 1 because I have large hands. If you digits are more on the dainty side, then a Model 3 will be more up your alley.

The TU is very well made and heavier that it looks (being CNC milled from solid brass) but not so much that it unbalances the M8. The current models are painted black and the paint will come off with use (like a painted Leica). Tim is investigating other methods of coloring the TU (hard chroming in silver and black). He is also working on a hot-shoe passthrough version.

I have been accused of ruining the discreteness of my M8. Seeing as I am proud of the Red Dot, I don't see that as an issue.

I came home from Jamaica Friday night, and found my TU on the table. Put it on my M8 and did a couple of quick shots to get a feel with it before going to bed. Yesterday, I took it out for a real ride, and all I can say is WOW. Even with my 135, and 90 f/4 Elmars, I found that I could get 8 out of 10 in focus at 1/8-4 sec exposure. About a 90% increase over using it without the TU. That says alot for me, though YMMV.
I am on the list for the new PhotoEquip M8 grip, and am rethinking my options as to needing it now.(though I will probably still get one)
Tim did us a great service with this device, and I send accolades his way for it.
FWIW, I bought mine outright, and have not been compensated in any way.

Art, do you have a link to that PhotoEquip M8 grip? I can't find any link to it on their website.

It's not up yet on their site. I talked with Eric Paulsen. Just send an email to PhotoEquip@yahoo.com; and he will answer your questions. Seems like a good design again, as you do not have to remove the baseplate to use it, unlike the Leica Grip. I think that, with my large hands, the TU, and the grip, I will be set.(although with the TU, I am really set now)

So, in order to get at the SD card in M8, I would have to take off the grip then take off the baseplate? If so, then I will stick with the M8 grip I currently have. I had a Luigi case and, luxurious though it was, it really cramped my style by making photo downloading a four step process from the two step it is right now.

If you look at http://www.photoequip.net/;
you will see that the grip attaches to the baseplate via the tripod mounting hole.. There is a cutout over the locking screw, the whole assembly lifts off as if the grip wasn't attached. Hard for me to explain but, the grip and bottom plate "become one", for a lack of better words.

I've had them on my other M's 3, 4-P, and 6.

BTW, it stays a two step process.
