Hi all, I hope it's ok to hijack the thread for a moment.

My partner and I will be travelling to Hanoi in early October this year. Any suggestions on what to do and where to go? We'll only be there for 6-7 days so hoping to avoid stuff that involved too much travel time.

Both of us are unashamed foodies, so eating suggestions are encouraged ;) Street photography will obviously be a big one for me. I'm also a pretty keen runner/trail runner and really enjoy running in new cities, so any suggestions of urban/suburban reserves or parkland would be appreciated.

Dislike tourist traps with passion, so I'm not super keen on the 'bucket list' destinations.

Thanks in advance! Looking forward to posting some work in this thread :)

- 6-7 days is a long enough to travel/ discover Hanoi and other surround provinces. Is this your plan or you will stay the whole trip in Hanoi?
- foody stalls and restaurants are eveywhere. just look at tripadvisor when you're near by a location, price range is from low to high end luxury
- for running: I think that running around the Hoan Kiem lake (2km) or West lake (18km) or running from old quarter accros ancient "Long Bien bridge" would be a nice experience. If you want to run in side a park, look for "Yen So park", a huge new one in South of Hanoi. Or Hanoi Botanic Garden, right in the historic one.

Hope that help.

Thanks for the suggestions!

We would like to get out of Hanoi for some of the trip, although I expect we will stay in that general region.

^how far out of Hanoi ? Sapa , or Cat ba areas ? hopefully it won't be as hot and humid as it was in May of this year , jeez it was over the top ! Peter
Sure do love this country , jet lag back to Vancouver was painful to get over .

an update to the railway which goes through the city of Hanoi
when I started to photograph it about 8 years ago, that area was kind of an abandon neigbourhood where poor people lived there
NOW, it has become AN TOURISTIC AREA.
It's quite interesting to look back to see then and now.

I have enjoyed looking and reading through this thread very much. I will be travelling to Vietnam soon, from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi and plan to just take my M3 (Although I have toyed with a second M body). I will be leaving medium format and an Xpan behind and hope I don't regret that decision, however weight and being miserable because of too much weight/gear is the deciding factor.

Sapa is a great ( or was 3 years ago ) , was about a 3 hr bus ride from Hanoi along the Red river . Probably the nicest most spacious bus I've ever been on . Expect to be swarmed when exiting the bus , Indigenous peoples in colourful garb . Nice market , lots of hiking and tours of the numerous tribe villages . I'd suggest one of the local tribes people for a tour . Quite a bit cooler than Hanoi . Water buffalo everywhere . And as the op of this thread has mentioned , tourism is ramping up quickly. And yes medium format was a bit of a challenge , specially with the humidity . I have a few pictures on the forum. Peter

Also have a look at the so-called Ha Giang loop. Beautiful vistas. Mostly done by scooter or motorbike riders -either individually or in a group. Not sure if you can do it by mini-bus or 4x4. For a taste, have a look on youtube.

yes, Sapa now is a overwhelmed with tourists, especially since the highway from Hanoi is completed and the cable car to top of Fansipan summit is in operation.
Right in the middle of old center now is a giant 5* hotel
