Sent M3 to Youxin Ye on 2/17.

Youxin received it on 2/21.

CLA complete and M3 on its way back home 2/25.

Back in my hot little hands today. Time elapsed: 13 days. Awesome!

It is like a new camera. I have slow shutter speeds now! I can take pictures in dim light inside now! Can I have a witness? Hallelujah! Whee!

I mentioned this on another thread, and I'll mention it here. I had the opportunity to fondle a new MP a couple of weekends ago, and honestly, did not think it was any smoother than my M3. My M3 is even better now. It wasn't easy mailing my baby off clear across the country, but so worth it.

That's what I figured. I looked at the MP (as in 'considered the MP') as an "up to date" M3. I know everyone here will say it's far more than that, and perhaps it is, but to me, even comparing my M6 to the M3.. I think the M3 still has the edge in terms of "joy of use" and "usability".

Glad to hear you have your baby back home with you.

Cheers 🙂

> Frank, Leica techs usually ask not to make public what they charged.

Why should it be a secret? It's a perfectly fair question,
and surely of general interest to this forum.

Frank: I don't believe they would care if we are discussing the price they charge. We're on the assumption that none of these technicians are running a shady operation and their pricing structure is not based on a case by case basis.

I'm curious to know what Yuoxin charges for a CLA so I can decide whether to consider him for any future service needs.

congrats, Melanie! a freshly CLA'd M3 is indeed a thing to behold.. or better yet, to be holding

now let's see your hot little hands put it to use

The CLA cost $80, plus shipping there and back (from SF to MA was about $30 each way including insurance -- I got paranoid and insured for $1000).

The viewfinder is so bright now it's unbelieveable. My camera had never been serviced (the little wax thingie was still intact) and it was long overdue.

Yeah, wow. I've heard other references to CLAs going for as much as $300. Was this a full service CLA? You already mentioned that the viewfinder was cleaned, so it sounds like a great deal. What would be the difference between this $80 CLA and the expensive ones by the other well known names (DAG, Sherry K.)? Or maybe I am just wrong about the prices of the competitors?

Having 'fondled' Melanie's M3 tonight I must say he did an absolutely awesome job.
The viewfinder is as bright as any MP viewfinder, everything is smooth as butter - and the damn thing just looks amazing 🙂

I'm seriously considering sending my M3 down to him as well for the same treatment - can't beat the price and turn-around time.

Dag is about $290, Sherry is $215 labor + $40 parts. These are the prices they quoted me when I inquired for an M3.

There was a thread recently on the great difference in CLA pricing. Some believe that DAG and Sherry are simply able to charge a premium for being the best known in a niche market working on top of the line cameras. Others say they offer more and do more for the camera than the other guys. That is, "CLA" is a very vague term- for some it could mean going over it for 15 minutes, yet for others its a complete overhaul and rebuild. I don't think the thread produced any definitive answers.

I don't know the US market and haven't had much experience of getting Leicas serviced (although my M6 is off to CRR in Luton in a week or so) but I have had a lot of work done on Pentax's.

I don't think that the "CLA" price is affected that much by reputation but more on "working practice" and overheads although these will in turn affect the reputation. If you look at the CRR website and having spoken to them, there is no definition of CLA. They give a guide price about the same as DAG etc for a "general service" but there are also guide prices for shutter repairs, meter and rangefinder repairs and wind/transport repairs. When I spoke to them about the M6, they said they prefer to get the camera and assess what needs to be done and then quote for it.

I have a very good repair tech near me in the UK. Because of ill health, he cannot keep regular hours and therefore cannot work for a company although he has worked for many of the big names in the past. As a result he effectively works from home and so has low overheads. Although his work is excellent, he is limited in spares and therefore there is a limit to what he can do. For many of the jobs he has done for me, he has done what is necessary to get the camera fully working and to correct any faults and he has prices to match. For the "cheaper" cameras, this works very well. On the other hand I also use a Pentax specialist in London. He works from the old Pentax HQ near London and when Pentax moved, he bought most of the older stock of spares. His overheads are therefore that much higher but he can deal with many more problems. He also works on the principle that he will give a "complete" service while the camera is in pieces on the priciple that much of it may be preventative rather than correction. As such, it will probably be a greater time period before the camera needs attention again. Needless to say his costs are a bit higher. In both these cases, I think they are excellent techs and fully trust the work they do. Both have very good reputations and are well regarded. Which I use will depend ion a variety of factors.

I can't make a judgement on Melanie's camera or the work but she had a shutter problem. If this was the only fault with it, and Leicas do seem to go on much longer without needing too much attention, then perhaps just her shutter was serviced and while to top was off, the VF was cleaned. If so this could explain the price difference.

Mel, how did you contact Mr Ye? I had tried to get in touch with him in the past, but his email address and did not work an phone calls were unanswered. This was during a period I guess when he had taken some time off.

I contacted Youxin and asked him the following questions - he emailed back within 24 hours with his reply:

a) What's your price for a full CLA?

A: $80 plus back shipping cost (the same as you paid to
ship to me).

b) What is indcluded (what is checked, cleaned, etc)

A: Clean/lube/adjust both mechanical and optical parts.
I use digital shutter tester to test speeds. I also make sure the finder works properly
(vertical/horizontal lines). Tiny missing body cover repair is also included.

c) What is the current turn-around time?

A: Within two weeks to get you back upon receipt of the camera.

Is Youxin promnounced "you-shin"? No clue. Just curious. I sent him an e-mail with a couple of questions regarding above and beyond CLA service.

🙂

Youxin just did a CLA on my M2, IIc and three lenses and the total cost was less than a CLA for one camera from other Leica techs (whom I've used as well and do great work)
I know everyone has their favorites, but like Melanie (btw, I'm a Cal grad!) I am completely sold on his service. My M2 is like a new camera, no kidding!
