Hi,

I just had a pretty horrible thought... Maybe I just need to chill & check with the airlines, but I think I may have to check my cameras (brought my best ones!) for my flight back to the US on Sept 8th? Has anyone had experience travelling back into the country recently? Any info is appreciated!

Regards,

Peter

Depends on where you're flying from. It's up to the airline/airport at your departure country (and, of course, changes daily).

I travelled from the US through Britain two weeks ago when British Airways were in their transparent plastic bag frenzy, so not your situation entirely but maybe comparable. I had to check my Bessa R (and my laptop and so on). The rangefinder is slightly misaligned from bumping, but otherwise everything was fine.

You should call your airline up in advance.

I just got back yesterday from a cruise to Bermuda. My new electric razor was stolen from my checked luggage. I carried my cameras with me. Maybe airline luggage handlers are more honest, or under tighter scrutiny, but I wouldn't check an expensive camera. If I couldn't carry it on, I'd try and have it shipped ahead.

Two weeks ago I came back from Sweden, connecting through Frankfurt. Security in Germany confiscated two felt-tip pens, but noone said anything about the Kiev 4AM in my briefcase, or the extra roll of film.

They did lose my checked bag, though...

When this all started, there was a hand luggage ban on cameras, laptops and elecronic devices through British airports. When I went through Heathrow last week, electronic devices like laptops and players were now allowed in hand luggage. When I returned through Heathrow today, digital cameras had been added to the list of permitted electronic devices. I still don't know about other types of camera. British Airways helplines could only read the same texts I could already see on their website and were unable to say if cameras were alowed, so I left them at home this time. Restrictions are being eased, so check airline and airport websites frequently for revisions.

Flew to LA on monday, flew back yesterday took my billingham with M4 and MP, iPod and Blueberry and other assorted knicvk-knacks aboard as hand luggage .... not a problem in the world... But then I always fly first class ..... this apparantly still does the trick-

I flew this week (out from Gatwick on Monday and back into Gatwick on Thursday) to Italy and took my dSLR with a laptop in my hand luggage. Their main concern now seems to be liquids and not electronic equipment. My mobile phone went with me as well.

Had no problems flying American Airlines Lima Peru to Miami FL on August 14 with two Olympus XAs and two Konica Minolta Dimage A2s in carry-on, and a lead bag with 35 mm film with was never opened either in Lima or in Miami when I flew on to Los Angeles. I did take the batteries out of everything, even though the signage did not say that was required and from what I could see, other passengers carried electronics with batteries. Dave

Thanks again for all the info guys... I'll check with Qantas & keep my fingers crossed... I have enough rubbish to deal with without worrying about my cameras as I'm off to Melbourne next week to have my visa renewed... What a fun time that's going to be!!!

Regards,

Peter

Just to wrap this up... I flew back into the US on thursday & had no troubles taking my cameras as carry on. I checked with Qantas before my flight and the only extra restrictions still in place are related to liquids... They even had mother's empty out bottles of water they were carrying for their young kids!!!

Cheers!

Terrorists take note. You won't get the same checks as the rest of us flying cattle class, and you get to eat a better meal before it all goes BOOM!!!

Eh. I can't afford first class. I flew to the US.. well I'm still here for another week, but I went through security and always had my M6 with me either around my neck or going through the x-ray scans. No probs.
