Consider...

Leitz (pronounced "lee-tz" Camera =
= LEItz + CAmera =
= Leica

Therefore, Leica should be pronounced leeca (Leitz), not lieca and everyone has been mispronouncing this name since, like, forever...

My ruling?

The correct pronunciation is of Leica is LEEca, not LIE-ca, since it is a concatenation of the first letters of the name "Leitz" - pronounced with a long "e", and the word "camera". You are to effect this change immediately.

Weird - Leica is pronounced Laica. I always pronounced it that way, just like in this German documentary. If you listen to the first 50 seconds, you will hear them say Leica (Laika) and Leitz Kamera (Laitz Kammera).

Why do you think Leitz is pronounced Leetz? That sounds more like the English city...

Merciful heavens to Betsy (however you pronounce Betsy)! Based on recent events, I'd like to nominate my cousin as the worlds most sensitive person. I recently met a man with the first name "Navid"--pronounced Nuh-veed. Well, my cousin's name is "David". We've been calling him Day-vid" for over eighty years and he has been too sensitive of our feelings to correct us. Any other nominations?

I've noticed there's a company LAICA, who sell home appliances and personal care products. These should be close relatives to another personal care company 😀
