Have an M8, want an X100?

Right, so I'm pretty poor but lusting after a Leica M8. Do you own one, and want an X100? Just give it to me then, and buy the X100 for increased karma points! It's a win-win kind of deal...

Just a question, what is your 35mm f/2 or faster lens if you're an M8 shooter? I know the M8 body is only a little more expensive than the x100, but I'm curious about size, weight, and cost of a good 24mm f/2-or-faster lens.

There are some great bargains on M8's as RFF'rs have upgraded to an M9. Mine was "near-New" with 400 clicks on it, in the box, all, packing, extra battery and case, under $2500 over a year ago. Also- the IR cut filters can be picked up by users moving to the M9. Some of mine were as low as $5.

I've seen the M8 run $1800 here in the classifieds.

I use the 35/1.7 Ultron, and picked up a 35/1.2. Not really a "wide-angle" shooter, but the Voigtlander 28/2 Ultron would be the closest for an M8 shooter to what is on the X100.

For a real cheat, I picked up a Nikon F to M-Mount adapter, and use the Nikkor wides as scale focus.

Nikkor 24/2.8 on the M8, wide-open.

The Nikkor 28/2 that I have was $100, a real beater with perfect glass.

Since I'm blind as a bat and can not even see well enoguh to focus with the current crop of rangefinders the X100 is the only way I can go unless someone does what Contax did with the G and make an AF rangefinder but in digital, it's the closest I can get. I'd love to have an M8/8-2/9 but the eyes are too far gone.

Since you have written that you have never used a viewfinder or manual focus camera I'm excited to hear what is best for me, from your research.

If poor but proud, try the Voigtlander 28/f2 Ultron in Leica M Mount -- new, $579 from the host of this site,Camera Quest If you want arguably, "the world's sharpest wide-angle lens," the Leica 28mm f2, you will need to pay $4000. You can get into Zeiss' line for about $1100-$1300 for various focal lengths and they're as good by-and-large as the Leica lenses.

Isn't it nice to have options, interchangeably, and the best glass available in a small package? No one trick pony, like the Dacia Sandero of cameras.

(PS- I don't find 1 stop that critical for general purpose, high ISO digital cameras - if tis is... good for specialty work, maybe, but more a marketing number than significant improvement for a compact.)

35mm f/1.2 nokton, but I tend to grab my 28mm f/2.8 Elmarit ASPH if I want something compact. Both work really well on the M8 (I tend to swap them around between my M8 and M6).

That to me is why the M8 for wide angle isn't that appealing. I've thought about getting an M8 eventually with a 75 or 90, if I find the x100 to fill my wide angle needs and want another small camera with a long lens. One stop isn't that much from f/2 to f/2.8, but this isn't comparing similar sensors like the X1 and X100, which I would give you is only one stop. This is comparing a much older M8 sensor, and I'm sure it's a nice sensor, but it can't do ISO 6400 you'd want to print.

Used M8 + voigt 28mm f/2 = 2,380 vs X100 at 1,200 (presumably). Changing lenses is nice, but that's what I have my 5D for.
