Having second thoughts about the Sony NEX 7

I preordered with Amazon for use with legacy lenses. Plenty of time to cancel and 30 days once received. I did the same with the X100 and just finished a week in Kauai with the X100 as my only camera. I'm glad that I picked one up. For those waiting for prices to drop, I noticed that the NEX-3 has dropped by $50 from MSRP.. is that the sort of savings that has you waiting?

"because the LCD is useless for focusing in bright light"
From what i'm reading, the newer generation of NEX is much better in that regard. Someone who just reviewed the 5N or C3 or whatever said he had no trouble in bright sunlight.
.
For real? I had not heard this. Any sources?

The NEX-7 was the first camera I've ever pre-ordered, and it is for the following reasons. BTW, I currently only use rangefinder lenses on my NEX-5 (and occasionally the Sony 16mm.) I MAY try the Zeiss 24/1.8, but we'll see.

- The new interface with the multiple dials. Even though I mostly shoot in M mode, I think the interface advancements will still help me out in some ways. In fact, one small thing that drives me crazy about my NEX-5 is that it only shows shutter speed and aperture in the simplest on-screen display setting. The newer NEX cams seem to have added ISO to that screen, which makes a big difference for me, albeit it's a seemingly small change.

- While the NEX-5 prints great at 13x19, I still do notice the resolution increase of my A900. The NEX-7 should more or less solve that.

- I like my little nexviewer invention, but the new Sony EVF tech is hard to ignore, and it'll make my setup slimmer.

- The expectation of better corners in these new NEX sensors. Someone tested my most used lens, the ZM 35/2.8, on both the NEX-5 and NEX-C3 on another forum, and the lens performed much better on the NEX-C3 at the edges. If the corners are as good as many are expecting, I can get rid of the Sony 16 and buy a CV 15, and I'm hoping some of my other lenses perform a little more like I originally expected them to in the corners (like the CV 35/1.4.)

Who knows if that is worth $1200, but what the heck! :) GAS

How is the sony 16, by the way?

Regarding the sensor technology, I think the 3C, and 5N are pretty much known to use the D7000/5100 sensor. This is good.

The 7 sensor may or may not be better. Are there any current camera's using this?

This is exactly my situation. Since I have two Nex3's, I'm perfectly good for now. These cameras have alot of mileage left in them.

Reinvesting in Nex7's would end up costing me at least three grand. I want to run my Nex3's into the ground, so I can get my $$$ out of them.
A NEX-3 body goes for 300$-400$, at least to me... a viewfinder and more pixels are not worth 800$. It's not like I don't have the money, I don't see that big of a difference. With legacy lenses I set aperture on the lens, then I just use the wheel to set shutter speed and that's it. Even if I want to change iso, it's only one click away.

New perspective: The new NEX 5 has super fast shutter lag, touch screen and can take an EVF when needed, plus still nice and small.

It's new, I think, for the A77, A65, and NEX 7.

Nex & is LARGER than the Olympus Stylus Epic!!!!! Thank God!!!!

Nex & is LARGER than the Olympus Stylus Epic!!!!! Thank God!!!!

In videos posted on Youtube, I have seen the NEX 7 held by Sony reps and let me tell you, it looks like the same size as my M8 or maybe between the M8 and the fuji X100. This is important because I have big hands and fingers as well as some heavy lenses (Noctilux). The micro camera thing just is not practical for me. The X100 is probably the smallest I can handle.

For people who like cameras in their glove compartment, purse, etc,, the smaller compact digitals are fine. For anything else, the size of the M8/9, X100, Nex7, etc, are much better!!!!!

The Nex-7 is smaller than the X100. It is about half way in between the size of the Nex-5 and X100, and it is close in size to my Nex-5 with a leather half-case attached. It is still a pretty small camera.

edit: I just noticed that it is pretty similar in dimensions to the old Panasonic GF1.

I'm sorry - i can't find the link. Not even sure when i read it.... It was sometime this week, but i'm online so much, i can't find the page in the trillion sites i've visited in that time. It was a comment by someone who was using the latest generation of NEX. It wasn't the 7, which i don't think anyone has experienced yet. Must have been about the 5n or 3c. If i come across it again, i'll come back to post it.

The specs posted show the NEX7 as considerably smaller than an M8 or x100. When i found them, i cut out a piece of paper in those dimensions, just to get a sense of it and how it might feel with a few of my manual focus lenses on it. It's SMALL. Can't get a good sense of that just from the online images, which make it look quite large (i had been afraid of the Zeiss 24mm). I'm surprised to hear you've seen it in person and still believe it's M8-sized.

What happens to all those cameras you guys will return? Will they re-sell them as refurbished models at cheaper price? If yes - keep ordering more!!!

keep ordering more? When manufacturers set the price, they take into account all the wise guys who carelessly order and return perfectly good functioning cameras for no good reason at all, causing the companies losses. Go to a camera store and try it. Or use one of the trial orders with demo cameras, make a sound decision and order the one that y ou like. Otherwise you are responsible for the high prices of every new model.

Okay, my memory is completely whack. It was an article about the SLR, the SLT-A77:

http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/AA77/AA77A.HTM

About half-way down:
"The good news is that the Sony A77's articulating LCD is excellent in both bright and dim light. Its 921,600 dots make another smooth image, one that seems to be transflective, or both transmissive and reflective. Sunlight striking its surface reflects back in relatively bright color that is quite a bit better than trying to read some LCDs through a dark coverglass."

Incidentally, here's a nice preview of the NEX-7:

not a beginners lens, but if you bother to learn it....

corners may improve on the new sensors.

.75 adapter gives you an AF 12mm with little or no loss of rez.

some who use it alot say f/4 is peak performance, where the centers

here at f/5.66

It doesn't look as big to me.

Also we don't know the size of the people holding the camera.

A girlfriend of mine needs both hands to hold my Nikon F5, while for me it's a nice point'n shoot.

Judging by the specs it will be quite compact.

Agree with you M's are a nice size

I expect it will not be as good as the NEX-5N at such high ISO. However, there will be a gain of resolution at low ISO. The real question is at what ISO setting will the image quality shift from the NEX-7 to the NEX-5N.

If it is over 1600, it won't bother me, since I rarely shot over it. If it's at 400-800, then it will concern me, and might make me reconsider buying it.
