Having second thoughts about the Sony NEX 7

I just got back from a sunny holiday, I used on occasion a Pentax digital P&S. The LCD screen effectively does not work in bright sun. The EVF therefore for me is essential, as the alternative does not work. OVF is great too of course, but non-viable on something like the NEX. The NEX 7, if I were to shoot digital more, is pretty attractive therefore.

I have to wonder how much smaller the NEX 7 with the Zeiss 24mm f1.8 is than... say... a 5d with a 35mm f2... Because you could buy a 5d + 35mm f2 for less than a nex 7 body by itself.

I'm not taking away anything from the NEX, all Im saying is it would just be interesting to see the size difference - I can't help thinking from the pictures that the size of that sonar 24mm kind of negates the whole point of the camera....

As a NEX user, is the whole idea to eventually port over to all of Sony's auto focus lenses from my wonderful manual focus M-Mount lenses? If not then who gives a hoot about the size of the new Sony/Zeiss lens?

The 5Dii is WAY bigger than the NEX-7, even if you used the same lens on both. To give you a rough idea, here is a nex-5 next to the A900, and the nex-7 is only a little bit bigger than the 5. The 24/1.8 is still a relatively small lens, it just looks big on the tiny nex body.

Thanks for that bit of perspective.

I recall a visit to B&H, when i first saw the NEX cameras. I was shocked at how small they are. Doesn't really come across in the online pictures.

Yes, i understand the normal complaint that the lens size doesn't make sense, or that they negate the body size. It's true- it's not going to end up being the same as pocketing a Contax T3. But, the difference between an SLR (or even an M) is still huge, even with the ginormous Zeiss 24mm, which really isn't that big.

Still, a 30mm f2 lens, the same size as their 18mm pancake, would totally make the system for me.

I don't envision the Zeiss 24 will seem so very big, compared to a 28 cron or 50 lux on top of an adapter...

Didn't sony open up the e-mount, so anyone can produce lenses royalty free? Maybe Cosina will step up... ;)

I think it is nice to have lenses that are designed for your camera body so you can take advantage of everything the nex7 offers. While I like my M lenses (and would use them on the 7), I sometimes like AF too. However, the size of M lenses has spoiled me. Therefore, I'd love to see native lenses that are small.

FWIW, the 24/1.8 is about the same length as the 24 Summilux, but, of course, much lighter weight.

Still, I do like the size of most M lenses, and, for my standard lens, I'll be mostly switching between my MS Optical Perar 35, CV 35/1.4 and ZM 35/2.8, depending on the situation.

I don't really get the argument about the lens negating the body size.
Surely it's best to have as much as you can smaller and lighter, and deal with the rest, just because the lens is huge, doesn't mean I want my filters to be massive too, or if my camera is big I may aswell get an enormous flashgun to with it.

I have been released from the NEX spell and have been given the go ahead for another Film RF. (I have an M3 and a ZI) What next? Got $1200 to play with. Any advise?

My advice would be to keep the money until you find something you really want and not to search for something to buy just because you can... (I'm trying to come to terms with my own advice too).

Actually I think I will get the 18-200 lens first before getting the Nex7. If Nex 7 is released now when I have a wedding to attend on end Oct, it would be a target. Given that it miss that, I think I would use the lens and let your guys fit the bugs first. Remember Nex when it comes out and also when we have the current focus assist features. Wait ... Wait ... Wait ...

I gather that the 18-200 is a mediocre long zoom, but a decent lens for video. You are buying one, so what is your take?

I don't really have GAS attacks concerning digital.

My Nex 5 is all I need imagewise.

But..... too much of my pictures end up :Wow nice shot, pity it's not in focus.

So I need the EVF because I have trouble seeing the screen.
(And I keep looking silly raising it to my eye.)

So it's NEX 5N.
So why not go whole hog and get the NEX 7.

I won't need an update for the nex :D few years and concentrate on Film GAS
