Hello,

I am heading off to Hawaii for a week and can't decide which lens to bring. A few months ago I took a 4 day trip to NYC and I brought them all and kind of aggravated a shoulder injury.

I was thinking to leave some at home but dont want to regret it. I love all my lens.

For my M 240 i have the following lens:

90mm 2.8 tele elmarit
50mm 2 cron
50mm 1.4 Canon LTM
35mm 1.7 Voigtlander
21mm 2.8 Zeiss

Which would you take and which would you leave at home?

I'd take the 35mm and 90mm, my usual traveling outfit, but of course it all depends on the kind of pictures you think you'll want to shoot.

hard to recommend without knowing what you like to shoot.
what i always recommend is to bring the lenses that you like to shoot with.

21-35
21-35-90
21-50
21-50-90
35-50
35-90
50-90

If it was me with those lenses, I'd take these.

35/1.7 CV
50/2 Summicron
90/2.8 Tele-Elmarit

When out "looking for pictures", I'd mount the 35 and carry the 90 in a small bag.
When doing other things, I'd take just the camera wearing the 50.

I find the 50 can do places, people and things generally pretty well as long as I'm not close or not too far, making it my one lens choice. And since the M240 can handle ISO 3200 acceptably well for me, I wouldn't feel compelled to bring another 50 with one more f-stop.

Whereas, a 35 captures places and people in places better while a 90 captures things and people portraits better.

Wider lenses are more for special situations with me as I'm real sensitive to perspective distortion, so there'd be less chance of me using that one.

Though if you already have 21mm shots already in mind, don't forego them. It might be worth it to lose the 90, take a step forward using your 50 for tighter people pix, and run around with a normal, wide and wider setup instead.

If only one, the 35. If two, then the 35 + 90 like others have suggested.

I'm traveling to Hawaii for a week in a week's time as well and am looking forward to shooting. Safe travels!

I'll just get this out of the way and say Hawaii would be one of those trips I'd take at least four lenses, 21, 35, 50 and 90mm.

I could not imagine going to a place like Hawaii and not having a superwide option. If I had to just pick two, it'd be the 21 and 35mm.

In my own case, two of the lenses, the 21 and 35, would be mounted on bodies where all I had to do was pull the body out of the bag with the lens I wanted to be shooting. The 21 would stay mounted on that body and I'd be using the second to switch between the other three lenses, and I might not use the 50 or 90 all that much, but if I really needed either, I would want to make sure I had it available. No telling when, or even if, I might ever be in Hawaii again.

That's a good point. Hawaii is a lot less accessible than somewhere like New York is, especially considering OP's location.

Might as well go balls to the wall.

I have been to Hawaii more than once and would recommend the 90 and a 50, plus the smart phone for social media uploads. The 50 will carry the load, and for whale watching / landscapes there might be times for a longer lens... What island?

If I could only survive with one lens it would be a 28. Since you don't have that, I would go with a 35 (which, to be fair, is the best all around FL in my opinion). Mary Ellen Mark and Annie Leibowitz favored the 35. It's a very natural FL for most situations, and 1.7 is fast enough to use pretty much wherever.

21, 35 has my vote. 50 is a very in between FL for me... Never bonded with it. 21 for landscape shots. I've never used a 90, so I won't comment on that.

Maui and Kauai. Its for our 5 year anniversary. We had our Honeymoon there. I have been to Maui but never Kauai, so not sure what to expect.

Any recommendation from those that have been?

I personally think 90mm is too long for Maui and Kauai but I don't know your style.

IMHO, 21-35-75 would be perfect for those two islands. Without a 75mm, I'd take the 21-35-50.

Kauai, my favourite Hawaii island.
North side is my favourite spot with Hanalei, Queens Bath and the Napali Coast.
If you like hiking, do at least the first 2 miles of Kalalau Trail.
On the West and South side there's Poipu, Waimea Canyon and view of Napali Coast from the top.

If you can only do one activity while in Kauai, take a helicopter tour of the Napali Coast

I spent two weeks in Maui last winter. For Leica gear, I had my M3 and M4-P, with a 50/1.4 and 35/2.5. I often just went out with the M4-P and both lenses, and I'd say I shot with the 35 and 50 fairly equally. That said, given what you have, I would likely go 21/35/50/90. This would have been my preferred setup for the trip...
