HC-110 + HP5 specs wanted

I'm looking for a high dilution (1:100), minimal agitation time, for this film in this developer @70F, in order to acheive some compensation effect.

This is a new developer for me, and I'm developing my HP5 from the Montreal in May meeting.

Sorry Frank, I've got nothing in my notes about this-

The tech sheets I've got for HC-110 say the old Plus-X has the same recommended starting time as current HP5 for HC-110 dil. B (5 min@68-70) if you can extrapolate anything from this?

I've always used Microdol-X and pulled the HP5 for compensating dev.
ISO 50 dev. Microdol-X 1:1 for 8 min.

You've checked the big chart?

Hi, Frank.
I am using HC-110 Dilution H (1:63) 68F for 9 mins with 30 secs initial agitation followed by 2 gentle inversions at the start of each subsequent minute, with Tri-X and Neopan both at EI 200. This holds plenty of highlight detail and could provide some clue for experimentation. I would hazard a guess at 1:99 (easy maths) for 20 mins semi stand. Try it with an experimental roll before commiting your precious shots. This example is Tri-X in bright sunlight unfiltered.

If you are exposing at "BOX" speed, then I guess 13 mins is not too far off what I would expect. My personal EI is 200 so hence the 9 mins..

My HP5+ negs of the model shoot came out thin, developed in 1:100 HC-110 for 20min @20C with 10sec agitation every 4 minutes.

Next roll I'll try 21min with continuous agitation for the 1st min then 10 sec agitation every 3 min.

What total volume of developer are you using Frank ? It is vital that there is enough active developer to complete the job. One roll in a 500 ml tank would be ok.

I read on the 'net 6ml minimum per roll, and also read 3ml min per roll. (120 and 135-36 have about the same film area) I had 3 120 rolls in a 1500ml tank with 15ml of HC-110 (1:100), which is more than 3 but less than 6ml of developer per rolll.

Sounds ok. I think the initial 1 min continuous is a good idea to help things along. FWIW my negs developed in dilute HC-110 look at first glance to be thinner than those deved in Dil B, but the shadow detail is good. Less density in the high values though, making printing easier. Do you scan or print ?

I got this recipe from GeneW a while back:
works well with tri-x and hp5, and Gene has used with others I believe.

HC-110 1:100

development time: 3x dil B time

continuous agitation first 30 seconds, then 3 to 5 gentle inversions every 3 minutes (3 if you know you shot the roll in contrasty conditions, 5 for low contrast, 4 for "normal"
If you're not sure, use 4

I'm sure if you can get in touch with GeneW he could enlighten you with much more detail. He passed this on to me, and I really have not used this HC-110 recipe enough to give any advice beyond his basic recipe.

I always forget that minimum amt. of developer when really diluting- you might need to up your volume? If negs are thin I'd add 15% to that 20 minutes.

Thanks for the times. My times for HP5 and 1:63 are almost 50% longer at 13mins and my inversion are more aggressive at 10 turns every two minutes.

I too use the above dilution and time though with gentle inversions each minute. And lately I've rounded it off to 1:60 for ease of measurement. The 1:119 @ 20 min sounds interesting too.

With HP5+HC110, I was doing what some call "Dilution H."
My formula was 24 parts HC110 syrup [European] to 436 parts water for a 2-reel stainless tank. Development was 13 min at 70f, and the negs were usually on the thin or flat side. Ravinda_walia and another friend helped me arrive at this. See also Covington at:

Thank you all for these responses. I have spoken with Gene. It seems where I went wrong is by not agitationg continuously for the first minute and the way 120 film needs extra development compared to the same 35mm film.
