Anybody have a clue on what the modern-day equivalent in looks would be?

If I remember correctly EFKE is made ​​according to original recipe of ADOX-films from the 50s. ADOX was regarded as superior to AGFA at this time.

That was one of the best written and most informative articles I have ever read about HCB.

I have HCB's book in India and it was the first photo book I ever bought. I looked at it again and I was astonished how brilliant the man was. In fact I feel inspired after looking at that book after such a long time. We fall in the bad habit of looking at a lot of mediocre and bad work, which inevitably results in visual fatigue and lack of inspiration. Sometimes its a good idea to go back to basics and the source of what inspired us to pick up photography in the first place.

That is true but, it is also fun to try to replicate greatness. Not to try to make a mark, but just as a learning experience.

How else can one learn? Re-inventing the wheel is fruitless but "striking out on one's own" is feasible once the teachings have been learned.🙂

Anyway. I'm not trying to focus on one photographer to mimic, I simply wanted to know about the film he used. Now maybe I'll shoot a few rolls of tri-x for fun. I'm new to leicas. Some of u guys need to relax a bit on your assumptions.

We are not alone in this. "Just fine" is, from talking to one of his favourite printers, valid only for a given value of "just fine".

I read somewhere recently that during an interview exposure was being discussed and the interviewer asked him to calculate the exposure from the light falling on the man's face through the window they were sitting next to. Bresson did it instantly with total accuracy ... then gave him a calculation for the area in shadow which was also completely accurate apparently!

I guess That's all I mean by "just fine".

It is fascinating how the cult of HCB is developing. I think it is the triple barreled name, it acts like a potent mnemonic 🙂

Gosh, give the OP a break. He merely is interested in HCB. Most people have been and moved on to others as well.

I applaud such a question as the type of film used. Never thought about it before but find it interesting.🙂 Nothing wrong with someone interested in any particular photographer is there?
