Headaches

Since getting the M8 on Saturday, I've been involved in more heated arguments on the 'net than I have been in the whole rest of my life; the stripes, the green blobs, the people who argue that there is no excuse for the M8, that it's nothing but a rich boy's toy, that no sane photographer would have one.

I'm retiring from the M8 wars. I'll only discuss, and never again argue.

I agree... of course I said my peace in one of the other threads but I share your headaches and I can't even afford the M8

but that being said I will look forward to the photos that will be produce by Jorge and the others with the M8

If I had just bought an M8 I would be angry--superlative as the M8 may be when the shot parameters don't include those that trigger the casts or streaks or blobs to show up--that Leica let them out the door with so many basic faults. I certainly wouldn't want people on the internet rubbing salt in my wounds. I'm sure that no matter how long it takes Leica will eventually get the M8 right on all fronts, and when they do, I'll be thinking seriously again about getting one.

Reading the M8 threads at http://www.leica-camera-user.com/digital-forum/8890-back-into-box-goes.html just makes my blood boil.. here is Leica again, all cocky with their name prestige. Thinking they can make this M8 to work simply on loyal customers alone.. Why would they think otherwise? Just look at all these people who got in line to drop $5000 on a product they've never seen before. Look what happens now. Some really smart people up there at Leica I'm telling ya, too smart for their own good.. I still love my M6 as a product, but I have no respect for the company.

Sorry Mango but the probem it not something working photographers can just get on with using the cameras and ignore unfortunately. It appears that the IR glass cover of the sensor is too thin and blacks are comming out as magenta in both daylight and artificial lighting from excess IR and cannot be corrected through software. Telling them to forget about it and start taking pictures isnt going to help in any way. I think this is a fair gripe and should have been detected during the testing phase. More working photographers doing the tests (and fewer celebs) would have picked this up and saved them this embarressment. I will say however, its a trustworthy person that buys an electronic Leica product in the first batch sight unseen.

For some reason Leica forums attract opinionated people like candles attract moths. I sometimes find when I post on these forums and other similar ones, that there will be one or two ignorant and rude people who want to contest whatever I say, often in the most unnecessarily rude (and sadly sometimes uninformed) manner. Ignore them, seek confirmation for whatever you read, make your own decisions and at the end of the dya, do what you think is right and you won't go too far wrong.

You are making it sound like as if Leica didn't cause this situation and now they are the nice guys stepping in and offering a compassionate hand to these M8 owners.

We're getting all jumbled up in misquotes here. I said what I did in response to someone else's suggestion to people who are upset over these issues to "just get on with it".

I am for a fact 100% with you. A few cameras slipping out with badly soldered wires or a faulty switch or even a sensor installed backwards could be attributed to a bunch of workers being rushed to perform duties they don't have long experience at. Even that is inexcusable but it's not the same thing as when every (or at least those belonging to people who shoot indoors) M8 leaves the factory with several glaring defects, which are not failures of parts but system defects...which not only got by all the eyes in Solms but so it would seem, the eyes of everyone Leica allowed to test the preproduction samples.

Talking about a Leica M is for some reason as hated as an SUV, and brings out opinionated folk of all sorts. The main differences are, of course, a Leica M is environmentally-friendly (how many end up in the trash??), small, quiet, sexy, loved by many people of conscience, and won't explode if it rolls over. 😎
