Heading to Paris...

... for a few days and then trying to get around southern France. Anyone in France last weekend in August to 13 Sept?

Debating getting a Sony RX100 III when they come out. But part of me wants to take a Leica M. But I don't really want to take the Monochrom as I want colour as well.

The Sony makes sense as it's tiny, has a 24-70mm equivalent zoom, has the popup EVF and does video as well.

The Leica makes sense because it would offer full frame goodness. But I don't know about the weight. Sure it's small, but not as small and weighs a lot more than the P&S. And I'd need someone to trade an M 240 for my Monochrom to get colour. For lenses, I'd take the tiny Perar 35mm and a 50mm Summilux. The Summarit is tinier, but feel I'd want the extra speed.

Pack light or suck it up?

take the M or MM + 1 lens 🙂 dont have to worry about changing lens and enjoy taking more photos. forget about the rx100 unless you plan to have you in the photograph! thats what i did for my trip to asia for 2 weeks 1 camera 1 lens (i do have a fixed lens rollei for backup but usually left in my bag).

My M9's shutter button was rough and needed lubrication so I went there with the Monochrom and a 28 and a 50. I was very glad I did. I took the X100 for colour. The Monochrom was made for the City of Light. Weight was not an issue.

Ahhh.. Paris..... I loved it there in 2012.. it's a city with something around every corner. I will go back.. perhaps when Les and I celebrate 10 years together.... Gabriel M.A. is still there I believe. He was gracious to me when I was there in '12.

Hmmm... the 35 and 50mm Summiluxes each weigh over 11 oz. And the RX100 III is less than 11 oz. might make a good backup!

The monochrome might be the best choice for Paris, there isn't much color in the narrower streets and alleyways, though they are rich in subject matter.

But Southern France is very colorful, Nice in particular. A wide angle lens would be good for shooting indoors at places like churches and cathedrals.

On my last trip, I took two M3 bodies with lenses, one with color, the other with black-and-white. I also took a Rolleiflex. My bag was heavy, but the weight was manageable. I was using a Billingham 225 bag, if I remember correctly.

If you have time to yourself, bring the bigger camera.
If you have other commitments, sure bring a P&S, but mainly just enjoy the trip.

I used a two camera set up for my last trip to Paris. An m2 with voigtländer 35 1.7 and a Yashica LM. Worked out for me.

And as said, there isnt much color in the narrow streets and in the cemetaries, which almost is a must to visit.

Last time I was there I had a Leica M2+28/2.8 and a Rolleiflex Automat with me. I shot b/w in the Leica and color in the Flex - after sunset I packet portra800 in the Leica and b/w in the flex. 🙂 I also swapped the lens to a 40/2 for a little extra light
