I agree. I't probably closer to Ex+ or better the way most would rate it. No nasty focus shift issues either like the ZM C-Sonnar.

FWIW I received an email from KEH today announcing
a 72 hour web-only "Spring Cleaning Sale" May 25-27.

Is that a type 3?

Its a type 2; type 3 has a built-in hood - but the optics are the same. Type 2 only focuses to one meter, type 3, .7 meter. Type 2 has E43 filter, type 3 E46. Later model Type 2's ( 1992-95 ) had "50" marked on the barrel as well.

Any details on the Spring Sale? I'm getting ready to make a large purchase from KEH and it'd be great timing if they're offering some deals.
I didn't see anything on the website and I never got an email even though I've bought from them before.

There's nothing more to know. It starts May 25th. Go the the website that day and lots of the stuff will be on sale as a Spring Sale.

If it's a Type 2 is this really such a screaming, great deal? The Leica M lens price guide mentions type 2 of this lens going for $875 on average:

rich - its a good deal when buying from a dealer that has a liberal return policy. You might find one on ebay cheaper, but you wont have a return policy. If you read my price guide http://members.aol.com/dcolucci/a.htm
carefully at the top - its says expect to pay +/- 20% more from a dealer...so my $ 875 would be more like $ 1000+ typically from a dealer

Knowing KEH's conservative ratings and their 15 day return policy, yeh it's a screaming deal.
Too bad I swore off lens buying for 2007.

Thanks guys. Not familiar with the pricing of this lens or how accurate that price guide is on this lens either.
I'm find myself, in the name of simplicity and quailty, considering getting the 50/1.4 Summilux by selling my 50/2 Summicron DR, 50/2 Summitar and 50/1.5 Summarit. The DR works fine but has an issue which would have those three lenses selling for about what this one would cost. Any thoughts? I like the "classic" look of the Summarit and Summitar (not love, but like a lot) and really find the DR to have gorgeous character. How's the look of the Summilux vs. the DR?

rich- that is MY price guide and it is accurate, but one needs to read the top paragraph which states my numbers are mainly based on ebay auctions ( $ 875 for the lux type 2 ), and that buying from a dealer will add 20%, or approx $ 1000+ for that lens. So again, keh selling that at $ 889 with a return policy is a good deal, especially since keh's reputation is fro under-grading.
The DR and type 2 lux probably ( I dont know ) have a very similiar contrast and bokeh. I would guess the DR has better resolution, aperture for aperture.

Thanks for your thoughts and the price guide, Dan!
I started another thread specifically asking for opinions on the Summilux vs. the DR and my idea of doing this "trade-out":

The 50/1.4 pre-asph is a remarkable lens IMO. Its not simply fast, but I like its color rendition as well. It has a definite signature if I ever saw one. I paid $1000 for mine, mint condition, including a B+W MRC filter.
