I know some people have been looking for Nikon Coolscan 5000EDs. The usual suspects like B&H or Adorama are out of them, and since it was discontinued, they won't get any old-new stock anytime.
Yesterday I went to Keeble & Shuchat Photo in Palo Alto, CA, to buy some Logan slide boxes, and noticed this display with 4 scanners for sale, $1,195 each. The salesman told me he had 2 more in stock.
Disclaimer: I have no financial relationship with K&S, other than as a customer (I bought my first Leica, a M6TTL, from them, and they have a wonderful display case with collectible Leica gear in their main store).

I just got one from KEH used. I've been contemplating on getting this for many months but was forced to bite the bullet before it's too late. I just hope I don't get hitches with OSX 10.5.8.

Nikon Scan is barely functional in Leopard, and not at all in Snow Leopard. I use Vuescan and am happy with the results, at least with the 5000. To use Digital ICE4 Professional on the 9000, you have to use Nikon Scan, which means Windows, unfortunately none of the Mac virtualization products support Firewire currently.

I've run nikonscan under a Fusion VM. Works perfectly with my 5000 ED.

I routinely use NikonScan (with a 4000ED) with Leopard. No problems here. But I do think I'll hold off on installing Snow Leopard.

I use Nikon Scan on Leopard too, and it works fine. But I have had problems with it on 10.5 before, and some people don't seem to have any luck (esp. mac pros with more than one Intel processor).
btw, reports are that it works on 10.6 too but I'm holding off to be on the safe side...

I am running Snow (10.6.1) and the Nikon Scan (4) runs fine on the Coolscan 5000. I had a couple of cases where it stopped in the middle of scanning a strip of 5 frames and the Stop button made it quit, but this has been a rare event so far.

Is this the same as the Super COOLSCAN 5000 ED that Nikon USA curently lists on its website for $1,199.95?

I stopped by this afternoon to see and feel the various scanners myself.
For those who are thinking about getting the Nikon V5000 be quick I was told there is only one left!

Yes they do! Seems like one of each model.
