I just bought a 40.5mm vented hood from "Heavystar" on ebay: http://stores.ebay.com/Heavy2stars-Photo-Gear .

Here is my comprehensive review:

It's freakin' great! Buy one now!

Seriously, it's all metal and painted flat black, much nicer than the rubber P.O.C. (piece of crap) that came with my 40/2 Rokkor...you know the one that is made from memory foam and takes the shape of everything else in you camerabag except round.

I'm going to buy a couple more from Heavystar, it came in three days First class mail and is a pefect match for my Rokkor. This one will not fit the 40/2 Leica lens though so beware which one you buy. They also have hoods of every type so check 'em out.

thanks for reminding me that I'm screwed with my Summicron-C .. but I have the same hood for my Sonnar.. and yes, they are killer

I just ordered a 43mm hood from him on Saturday. Thats great to hear they're quality!

I've bought three for my FSU lenses--40.5 "wide" and a vented "normal" and a 49mm "tele".
Arguably the best $ I've spent on gear in a while!

On the 40.5 vented hood. Consider this; ebay seller, american eagle, same hood for $9.95 + $1.50 s/h. I have both and they are identical. No affiliation, just have bought from both and would rather save a little.

I bought that same hood for my bro. It looks very kewl. Personally I like the standard non-vented lens hood. It's more compact and give me a little more space in my camera bag. I think I got mine from heavystar (*bay).

I don't mean to hijack this thread but what's the advantage of it being vented?

Interesting to hear that the 'American Eagle' hoods are of the same great quality... They looked to be the same when I wanted a vented hood for my J-8, J-12, Helios, but I only heard referrals to 'heavystar'... I eventually went with the known seller even though I was tempted by the cheaper price. Maybe I can afford another couple!

What Joe said about the vents is correct, you can see through them.

Also I looked for "American Eagle" and couldn't find any listings.

I'm also a satisfied American Eagle customer.

Simon - that vented hood from Hong Kong that you linked to - does it accept 55mm caps like the others?

thanks for the links to american eagle, same hood but cheaper, cheaper is better! I'm going to order one of those 43mm.

Ditto for me with American Eagle. I just bought:

2x 40.5 mm generic cap
1x 39mm generic cap
1x 39mm vented hood
1x 40.5mm vented hood
3x 55mm generic caps
2x M rear lens cap

All for $42 + $3 shipping to Canada. They got me the order to me very quickly, and everything is great.

You can email them directly to request what you want, then they'll send you a quote.

BTW, the 55mm caps fit on the vented hoods (heavystar's too). It makes a great setup.
