My experience as well.

Tom, in my post above I was referring to the 43mm Heavystar on the Nokton 40/1.4, BUT as furcafe reports, I've not noticed any vingetting with the vented on the rokkor. I've not used the 40.5 wide angle, yet. It seems a little shallow for the 40.

Are you considering a Heavystar hood?

As cool and aerodynamic as the vented looks, it blocks light from the RF/VF. I'll take photos of mine or link you to the heavystar one if you need. They don't call it wide angle, just "wide" 40.5 hood.

Aaah...OK. Well, I've got the 40.5 wide and the vented. I got both, because at the time I didn't know if the vented would or wouldn't block the RF window. I knew the wide wouldn't. So, I'm set on 40.5 hoods! 🙂 It's good to know that the wide is actually an effective hood. It seems too shallow to keep the sun out. 🙂

you might want to get a cheap slr and practice seeing what light actually comes thru the lens with the focal length you're using, with a rangefinder you have to just guess and check it later. maybe use an rd-1 for awhile if the slr is out of the question.

keep in mind, i don't use filters, except for weird fx, so I can get by with a much shorter hood, or even no hood if i want.

Heavy star and americaneagle appear to be selling hoods from the same source: S+W, whoever that is. I got a 40.5 vented hood from ae for my Konica 50/2, and it works great. Much better than the slide-out built-in hood.

Ray + Chris,

Thanks for the confirmation, I know the wide-angle 40.5 does not cause vignetting on my 40mm. But I wasn't sure about the standard 40.5 hood.

Now I can transfer the standard 40.5mm hood I use on my 50mm lens to my 40mm lens as well. thanks again

Ray, let me chime in here. You've seen my 40mm Rokkor lens. It had the heavystar wide hood on it. So small I guess you didn't even notice it!
I then have a snap cap that just barely grabs the lens threads on the inside. But that way I have a hood and a protective lens. Still an amazingly small package.
