Thanks. Thud's right, it's a WW2 Avro Lancaster. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight is made up of this Lancaster bomber, a Hawker Hurricane fighter and the famous Supermarine Spitfire. A great chance to hear the incredible sound of the Rolls Royce Merlin engines that power them.

Cal - mine was taken with a Nikon D4 70-200f2.8 VR II not sure about exposure but would guess around f5.6-8 and 1/500th ..... certainly not an rf shot.

I used to watch Shackletons flying over our house. The sound of four Griffons is amazing. As it happens, there are a couple of Griffon-powered Spitfires (PRXIX) in the BBMF.

Last Sunday at the NYC Meet-Up Joe was telling me he saw a pair of Republic A-10's flying so low over a body of water that they created wakes in the water.

Not an easy shot when planes fly so low to attack an enemy. I can imagine though if Joe got that shot of the pair of A-10's it would be really remarkable.

Also a few years ago there was a report of one of the Blue Angels flew his F18 Hornet under the Verrizanos Narrows bridge.

Decades ago when I worked for Grumman I was at Calverton Airport, and I saw a test pilot take off in a EF-111 which is known as being a bit of a dog of a plane as far as fighters go because it is kinda heavy for a fighter. Using very little runway the pilot started turning the plane sideways to the point I thought he would scrape a wing on the runway, and then the pilot kinda banked the plane with the plane sidways to squeeze inbetween two closely spaced air traffic control towers just for fun or to scare the Air Traffic Controllers.

About two years ago I saw a F16 flying in the blindspot of a commercial jet that was heading for Laguardia Airport (I was in Long Island City). I watched the news that night to see if anything would get reported. It was as if the F16 was following just the length of the 737 behind.

Lastly it is not uncommon for military pilots to pick out targets to "buzz". A guy I worked with was fishing in a boat in Long Island Sound and he got "Buzzed" by a Grumman A6 Intruder. My coworker said that he hit the deck because he thought he was going to get hit by the plane.

Griffons? So am I out of date, or simply wrong, regarding the Merlin engines on the BBMF? I always assumed there were just the three aircraft in the Flight but it would make sense to have various, if there are enough still flying.

The AStar is the de facto 5-seat in the world, period.
Seems that many American law enforcement agencies are buying these to replace the classic Bell Jet Ranger series.
Something about cost, performance, maintenance.
It's the choice of the stars who buy helicopters as well(Harrison Ford, Clint Eastwood, etc).
It is, and is likely to remain for a while, the only model of helicopter that has been flown to the summit of Mt. Everest.
