Hi, I'm new to RFF. I'm really grad to find this great place.
I've been a SLR shooter for years, since my first sereous camera which I bought myself was T90(20 years ago ?). Photography wasn't my big interest, subject(airplanes in those days) was. SLR used to fit my needs.
Even though my interests have changed, photography itself became my biggest hobby, I've been shooting SLR without any doubt. New F-1 and EOS3 for 35mm films, Hassy for 120 (T90 died after 17 years).
Recently, I kinda became to wonder. Why I shoot SLR, why not RF ?
I have a canon RF. It's a IIs2 which my father bought when he was a single. The IIs2 and a 50mm f/1.8 took the very first picture of me (I was just born). I also had used it before canon AE-1 came to my house(long time ago), but it wasn't easy to use camera for me. I was a kid. I was much excited with brand new AE-1 and pleased with ease of use. So was my fahter. Since then, II2s had been in a shelf untill I digged it out.
My II2s can be used, except slow shutter. I use it sometime, but it's hard to say that I'm satisfied.
For 120, I bought Bronica RF last month. And found that RF is more than OK with me, could be better than SLR for walk around shooting. RF is quieter, lenses are smaller and lighter. That's what I've heard, I agree now.
So now I'm considering to buy one in 35mm format. It would be canon.
Sorry for a long story and my bad English. I just wanted to say HELLO !

If you please, Give us some first hand insight into the second hand camera market in Japan. Have you noticed any changes or more of one paticuler item being sold or going up or down in price? Im realy looking at getting into some older or new older style gear and Canon and Nikon both are looking interesting. I would be very interested in your observations of the film vs. digital war that is raging as weve heard plenty of American and European views but I cant recall anyone from Japan commenting on it. Dont worry about the English thing as some native speakers are worse at than ESL members. Do you know any good camera rumors? Thanx and have fun, b.

The IIS2 is part of the last (newest) group of Canon rangefinder cameras that load film through the bottom. It has a better view finder than the earlier models. It is a little easier to see through.
If you want a bigger brighter viewfinder, consider a Canon P, 7, or 7s, all of which can use the same lenses as your IIS2.
Canon's Japanese site in Japan has a nice Museum at http://www.canon.co.jp/Camera-muse/, which will help you learn about their rangefinder cameras.

Welcome aboard. Isn't it nice to use something that was around when you were a Baby?

Hi! Thank you all for welcoming.
I was reading old threads in this canon RF forum. Lots of great info here! It feels little strange that being in Japan and reading about japanese cameras in english language.
Konnichiwa Bryan-san.
Since I'm quite new to the world of old cameras, my view on them is limited and could be wrong. I haven't paid much attention. I will stop by for looking around on used camera stores. There are many in Shinjuku or somewhere.
What I can tell now is that film SLR bodies have become cheaper in this digital era, but lenses haven't much. There was an enthusiasm for cultic classics and semi-classics several years ago. It looks cooled bit now, but still being over priced for my eyes.
We don't have e-bay in Japan but Yahoo Auction. Many items pop up every day, so I could report some of those if you're interested in price.
I was checking a VT-Delux with 35mm f/2, little shrinked shutter curtain, CLAed recently, leather cover included. It went to 52200yen(497USD?).

I don't know this price is reasonable or not.
For the film vs digital thing, I should have introduced myself as a very biased film shooter and a darkroomer.
I think digital is making photography population larger. Though many have moved to digital, I see and know some started photography with digital and have been interested in film. A little hope is there.

Welcome to RFF! I've always tended towards Canons and now have a few of them and hope to pick up a few more down the road (I hear the T90 & EOS 5 calling
). Your IIS2 has many family memories in it, a good CLA would probably give it another 50 years of memories. For more regular shooting, the 7 or 7s is hard to beat, though you'll hear much praise of the P hereabouts as well.
Oh and your English is far better than what little Nihongo I remember... :bang:

John, thank you for your suggestion. The first thing I learned about photography was I need to cut the leader of a roll of film to load it to the camera. Now I know a better way to do.
I think I would love to have bigger and brigter view finder. A frend of mine has a P and showed me. P's finder is bright enough for me, but I would like to have changeable magnification(?) one. 7 sounds nice.
I've known the Canon Museum. I've found that mine is IIS2 from the site(My father and I didn't know what model of canon it was). A parallel chart in the site is very helpfull.

Brian, thank you for welcoming. Yes, that's what I love the IIS2. I wish my father had a much easier camera to use when I was a kid. Because he gave up taking pictures early, so I don't have much pics of me

Thank you all again ! During I wrote A post there's a few more reply, can't catch up(I need a dictionaly with me, you know).
William, I too have been with canons for years. Now I only own a New F-1, an EOS3, a demi, a couple of APSs, and the IIS2. I would have my IIS2 CLAed in near future.
aizan, Yes, my name is Kunihiko Kario. "Kunihiko" is a popular name in japan, but my family name "Kario" isn't. I've seen it only in my relative.
konichiwa, suzums !

kunihiko,
very warm welcome!
my first film camera experience must be a konica pop my uncle introduced to me as a tourist snapshot camera; and then my "real" camera to use was that of my father's closet treasure, a Ricoh KR5... he then sold it because i wanted a auto everything AF minolta, and then and then and then and then and then and then.... i saw the picture of a canon P on Karen Nakamura's site.... then becomes the road to i don't know what, and the intellegence agents at the national security would have known that i have had among many others: konica t3n, canon vi-l, cosina ltm lens, m-hexanon and so many japanese electrical appliances but a japanese girlfriend
i must be trying to be funny, but i have been reading Yukio Mishima since 16 you know... an evil thought just came over me...
maybe (did i say "maybe"?) you can get some real japnese gem at yahoo acution for folks here who don't understand the japnese language
welcome friend!
