I've just visited a fairly major Arbus exhibition in Edinburgh.

I have to say, I found it terribly dull and uninspiring.

I would agree that neither her images nor her subjects were pathetic, but by the same token there was no excitement, inspiration or emotional content in her photos.

The crocodile is not a crocodile... Hey...this is art! Not a security cam! The crocodile is a macho treating a woman the way Helmut Newton hated. All his work is a caricature of the sad role play most civilizations impose upon women...

Not a dignified crocodile, but a proposal for a dignified woman.

ok, i'll bite. make an argument that newton is "a male who patronizes, disparages, or otherwise denigrates females in the belief that they are inferior to males and thus deserving of less than equal treatment or benefit."

I am sure that your god will punish him in the most appropriate manner.

At this, I must make a complaint about your signature lines. At the first it didn't trouble me too much, but now I am finding it more and more distasteful and offensive.
I would ask you kindly to remove it.
 
I didn't mind looking at this thread at all. It is an artistic discussion. Newton was, indeed, an artist. But I didn't care for his vision years ago when I was faith-less; I do not care for it now for an additional reason.

And no, I will not remove my signature; you may ignore it.
 
Hey, how about a little bit of tolerence round here? W likes Newton...fine. X doesn't like Newton...also fine. Y thinks he's perverted...that's his opinion and he's welcome to it. Z think he's boring...well his photos just don't turn Z on and that's his problem. And I think we are all entitled to have whatever signature lines we want...if it bugs other people then tough!

Newton loved his work & hated women! That's what his work speaks to me. Especially now after seeing the photo of the woman on the bed with a horses saddle? Is that respect? He just used them to degrade them them. Men by their own nature are lustful creatures that are aroused simply by looking on a woman. Like I said earlier Newton recorded on film the seediness & disrespect for women that lingered in his heart & mind & printed it on paper. If you guys like this stuff thats fine! I'm interested in reading your defense.

I don't see the picture that way, I just think it's a lousy picture. I was thinking more about what I don't like about his work and that and the alligator thing have a lot to do with it. It's kitsch, and though he has strong work, I find his indulging himself in kitcsh at our expense pretty boring. Like, "Oh, I'm Helmut, I'm so cheeky!"

Who gives a ****, Helmut?

Hey you started it when you made the comment you did in post #57. I said I wouldn't bring up religion so how about you cool it...please! I think I can discuss this in a manor that we can all appreciate, eventhough we might disagree! I guess my interest lies in what caused Newton to cross the bounds of say a glamour photographer like Bert Stern whos photos of Marilyn Monroe as well as others brought out her natural beauty!

Thing is, just because a photo is of a woman, that doesn't mean it's necessary to "bring out her natural beauty". In fact it could be said that that idea demeans her itself. A person in a picture can mean so many different things it's nonsensical to be limited by such a requirement, imo.

Perhaps, but how can you look at that photo & just think it's a lousy photo! How can a man just conjure up the idea to think I'll put a horses saddle on your back my dear! It'll make a wonderful photograph! Nah! that man had some seedy ideas floating in his mind! This is a powerful photograph that speaks to the viewer that a woman is no more than a man's sex object to be mounted & ridden to bring self gratification to onesself! period! I'm a man I'm not stupid!😀

take a second look at that picture, and think about it. you don't see the look that says "i DARE you"? you can try to control a horse, but it can throw you off whenever it pleases. talk about respect! a lot of these negative opinions can be cleared up by taking a break, letting the "shock" subside, and actually looking at the photos.
