Help ... ACDSee Pro won't recognise TIFFs from Sigma SPP

When I convert my DP2M's raw files to TIFFs in SPP ACDSee Pro doesn't recognise them? Converted from raw directly to jpegs they open ok.

There's no problems with ACDSee's file associations ... I've checked all the settings. All the other picture viewers on my laptop that came with Windows 7 view them without a hitch so the problem appears to be with ACDSee Pro.

I don't want to have to use Lightroom (don't have it anyway) because my brain is geared for ACDSee Pro ... I've been using it for years but I can't seem to find a way around this problem! 🙁

Hi Keith, does this link help? Perhaps Acdsee 15.1.197 supports the TIFF files? I can't see any specific mention of the TIFFs, just RAW compatibility..

I found some mention on dpreview of ACDSee not recognising 8-bit TIFFS, but having no problems opening 16-bit. Are you saving them as 16-bit?

If that doesn't work you might also want to check with the Steinmullers over on outbackphoto.net. They use DPMs with LR, but may know someone (perhaps in their forums?) who uses ACDSee. It also might be worthwhile trying seriouscompacts and L-L.

I tried saving them as 8 bit and 16 bit and neither opens! There is absolutely zero third party support for the Sigma raw files at this stage it seems.

I may just bite the bullet and get Lightroom 4 and learn to use it ... annoying though because I know ACDSee inside out having used it for ten years now.

That really sucks - I've always liked the results you've got using ACDSee and learning a new program isn't much fun. If you do get LR and have any questions feel free to contact me.

On the positive side, LR does a decent job and it's got good file management/database features; and it now seems to do Ok with the X-trans files if you're ever tempted by the Fujis.. 🙂

If you are looking at something new, I suggest that you take a look at Capture One Express 7. I am a lightroom 4 user but have downloaded the Capture One Express 7 trial (60 days) and I am very impressed with the default results compared to LR. It is also very much cheaper than LR. The Pro version is also not that expensive.

Sorry for your problem Glad to meet another ACDSee Pro user. I started with it at VER 2. But I have never tried using it for TIFF. Is there an advantage to using TIFF?

Before there was proprietary raw files there were tiff's. my. Rey first digital camera, I think was a 1mp Toshiba if I remember correctly. It had two choices for output and one of them was tiff.

Tiff unlike jpg is normally an uncompressed image file that can be shared between any photo editor, normally.. First time I have ever heard of tiff being rejected by any photo editor before.

I use both LR and aperture and they have no problem w/ the sigma tiff files. I am surprised. Capture one has both. Light version and a full.. The light version is around 100.

Just as a FYI ...

Not a workaround.. More of possible different approach. W/ attest Sigma fw update (1.04) and latest spp, monochrom mode is fully support in raw and spp. Whether u use raw only, jpg only, raw+jpg, u have a full processing path even in spp. They seemed to have added a flag in the raw file so that when spp opens the raw file for editing, it is doing so in monochrom mode. The editing in spp is pretty rudimentary, but it may suffice for some. All of the color info is still there in the raw file and u can actually switch over to color mode by using the tab at the top left.

Also instead of saving a tiff16, u can save a jpg w/ low compression if I remember correctly.

I just looked up acdsee file support. It supports dng as well. A rather painful way maybe tiff 16 to dng file conversion via adobe camera raw to dng app is a free download from adobe.

I double checked jpg save on spp. Default quality is 10 w/ max value at 12. If u set for 12, the compression is very small normally. I am not sure which version of acdsee u have, i just double checked the latest.. It claims to be non-destructive, so it should be ok. Your Jpg file will not lose quality due to saved changes.

Just did an experiment. I used a medium raw file which is 27mb a full size raw is 44mb btw. Did a save jpg at quality level 10. Jpg was 4mb then I did a save w/ quality level set at 12. The Jpg was 26mb.

ACDSee is a funny program ... it's not very powerful or complex but what it does it does very well and I'm reluctant to give up on it yet. Some of the tools in the raw developing function are brilliant and I've seen nothing to match them in any other software. The version I'm using is an older one and I may try downloading the latest incarnation tonight and see how I go.

I was mucking about with capture one last night and it's pretty good but still nowhere as usable interface wise IMO.

I also did do that exercise of saving to maximum jpeg in SPP and the files adjust well in ACDSee with the lossless edit ware.

Life wasn't meant to be easy! 😀

I am a believer in dear Murphy... Depending on how much older your version is, u may or may not like the new version.. The new version screws up your picture library database, there is a bug in the new version that u hate. Murphy rotten law come to bite us 🙁.... I tend to do a backup of my picture database and I make sure I have a copy of that older program to re-install.

The latest version of ACDSee Pro 6 has cured the problem ... I downloaded the trial version last night and we finally have viewable/workable TIFFs (84 meg).

This latest incarnation is excellent with some major improvements over what I was using (version 3). My favourite post processing software has just got noticably better and at $99.00 I don't understand why more people arent using it? It has none of that import export bull**** of LR ... you just click on the folder you want to open in the displayed file tree and you're in action! The interface which was near perfect IMO is now even better.

SPP and ACDSee seem to work very well together ... even if a third party raw converter emerged (ie Lightroom) I don't think I'd bother.
