Kansas. OMG. Kansas.
Hi, I found a mint M7 on craigslist and want to buy it but the lady selling it (Pat) does not want to consider shipping, wants to deal "in person". I spoke w/her on phone and it all sounds legit. I was thinking about mobilizing one of my ex-colleagues in the bay area but don't think any could tell a Leice from a potato.

So am wondering if any bay area rff member would consider helping me with this. Please ignore if this is not an appropriate request.

The m7, with grip, has 4 yrs of warranty left and is mint, at $2300 (best price I found).

Thanks in advance,

Andy

Well, the seller just emailed me, seems there is a chance we can come to an agreement on shipping, so crossng my fingers...

This may have been seen as a pretty weird request, and it probably is. I just got excited to find the M7 + grip at such a decent price. I can't believe I am buying a Leica!

cheers,

Andy,
If you need the help, there are others in the area, too, but I'm willing. Though I'm not sure what kind of help you are actually looking for...

Allan, thanks for the offer. My main concern was that I was buying a lemon or worse, sight unseen. Have just exchanged a few emails with the seller, asked for a coupel of days for inspection of the M7, this just might work by mail 🙂

Btw, do you think $2300 is a good price to pay for a mint M7+handgrip+4 yrs of warranty?

Well, I have no idea on good price or not. Others will. M7's are so far out of my range that I don't even track them.

If you do want someone to handle it or even take a lot of extremely detailed photos of it, I can do that for you. Or whatever.

Andy K, with hopes the M7 is duly delivered as promised and in great condition, I predict you'll love it! 😀 Has the 0.72x finder? The non-flaring improved MP finder not present on the earliest M7's?

Andy the price you paid is not bad at all, assuming that the warranty is transferable. If it is not, you need to request an agreement that any warranty repairs to the cam be conducted through your seller.

Doug, this one has the .58 finder, which is ok as I plan to use wider lenses. Not sure about the MP finder - the camera was purchased new last year - would that indicate anything?

Peter, thank you for the tip, I'd forgotten to ask this question of the seller earlier (definitely a good argument against making late night deals 🙂).

Well, time to go hunting for a good deal on a 28/35/50 lens...

Andy, the .58x finder would be my choice too since I also favor the wider end of the range. Sounds really good... As to the MP finder, I understand only early batch(es) of the M7 used the M6 finder and I expect many were upgraded with the MP improvement. So I'd think the way to tell definitively is to actually see if this particular M7 has a flary finder! Perhaps yours is too new for the problem, perhaps it sat on the dealer shelf for ages and actually predates the fix, and/or perhaps the previous owner or dealer had the upgrade done. Have fun!

If the finder is the old kind, will Leica people uprade it?

They'll do almost anything that you want, for a price. What that price is, I am not sure.

My best guess would be $400-500 for a total RF unit replacement.

0.58X finders don't flare much even on M6 TTLs, and if the camera was new in 2005, it's likely have the MP finder improvements, which started in 2003.
