Hi guys, a friend of mine today bought a Zorki4 , and sent me some photos of his new toy. Looking at this image I'm concerned about something missing... Do anybody can explain what to do to put the film in the camera? Does he need to make a piece to take the film? Is it possible to modify the shaft of an old film can?

I've seen in the thread about the CLA of Zorki 4k a compless element used to take the film, but in my Fed 5V there is a simple cilinder with 4 longitudinal cuts...

Help !!! :)

Thank you, and sorry for my English, I hope the image can explain everything

The spool is missing, that is the problem. I don't think you would be able to modify a film-canister one but they are available on *Bay and probably from some of the sellers recommended on here. The Fed 5 has a fixed spool, the Zorki 4 does not, so it's been lost.

By the way, your English is good enough!

Ok, the spool is missing... My friend knows somebody who probably can make a simple spool, but it could be useful to have some image of what to do: the spool of my Fed is really simple, and perhaps we can make something simple that fit the Zorki...

If you have a Fed spool, then that is what you need for the Zorki.
He doesn't have a FED spool - the FED 5 he has has a fixed spool and is of a completely different design anyway...

It's not so simple. The correct spool has 2 pins inside that grip onto the one of the four indentations you can see on the spool shaft. You *might* be able to get away with a spool that simply pushes over the shaft but it would have to grip reasonably well or else it will slip and wear the shaft away. It's much easier just to buy the correct spool, they are not hard to find and will work properly.

I think I recall that Alex-Photo, on the usual auction-site, has a lot of useful parts including both metal and plastic spools for Zorkis. It is a while since I checked, but he used to have a selection of yellow, green etc screw-on filters for the FSU lenses as well, plus lens-hoods. All of these are useful things for the "new" Zorki.

The later plastic spools fit loosely- made so that it will fit all types of FED and Zorki spindles. The loose fit will not affect its function, but only tend to drop easily off the spindle. A possible reason why the spool is missing on this Zorki.

Solved!!!! :)
My friend went back to the seller, and he kept off a spool from a Barnack Leica (fake, I suppose), and put it in the Zorki...
And now my friend is shooting is first rangefinder roll !!

Thank you to everybody

Ciao
