Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone in the UK can help me. I've managed to break the front window on the viewfinder on my r-d1. I got through to the 'r-d1 man' at epson UK, who told me that Robert White did all their repairs. Robert White say they now don't so back to Rob at Epson. He went off and made a few phone calls, and the upshot is I've been told it has to be sent to Epson head office in Hemel Hempstead. As Rich Cutler suggests, I asked if it had to be sent to the French facility, but Rob at epson uk tells me that they are no longer servicing the r-d1 there. Anyone know if this is true? Am I safe to send my pride and joy to hemel hempstead? All advice gratefully received...I'm desperate.

Mike

Sorry to hear your story.

Is the front window nothing but an IR filter type of glass? Can you not take an IR filter and get it cut in the same shape?

i don't think they're fixing it in France any more either, hence my R-D1 is going to Steve's Camera in the U.S. perhaps you could give him a call and see if he can sell you the part and have some local dealer replace it? i can't imagine it would be that tricky....

Hello

Well Epson France (their Creteil facility as described on Rich Cutler's site) just serviced my R-D1 4 weeks ago. Got it back with the gauges repaired for 90 euros including cleaning of the sensor.

It was a bit difficult to get a service number. I called Epson support and they first tried to steer me to third party partners that would eventually repair my R-D1. As much as Epson the two service partners I called barely knew anything about the R-D1. Second call to Epson: i insisted really hard on the operator who finally asked me to hang on for a few minutes to let him discuss that with his boss. Then it went like magic: he told me that indeed Epson France/Creteil will service it, he gave me a number and asked me to package the camera and write on the box this number.

It is just that their first level support barely knows the R-D1 but with some persistence I finally managed to have it serviced...

I am not sure if contacting Epson France directly will help. In any case it is also worthy to tell you that I first sent them an email by filling the form (https://serviceportal.epson-europe.com/standard/templates/frame.asp) but did not give that enough time. It turned out however that they sent me by mail a followup with clear explanations on how to service the R-D1 (it was not a generic answer, but a specific one with a contact name, and the procedure to follow for the R-D1) While the answer was not useful (as explained eralier i finally managed to find my way out), it was indeed accurate.

The steps were:
- Call epson france (0821 017 017) and insist to get a service number ("numero de retour en intervention")
- Then send to the following adress
Epson Engineering Europe SA
Service Reception Magasin (#ABOVE SERVICE NUMBER#)
Europarc
60 Rue Auguste Perret
94043 Creteil Cedex
France

They will inspect the camera then send you a mail with a repair quote: you either pay it, reject it (but you will then have to pay a penalty of 45 euros to get the camera back) or let Epson keep your camera :). I paied in my case the 90 euros + vat and got the repaired camera in a week.

Now it could be that they stopped servicing the r-d1 in the last 4 weeks but I doubt it.

Philippe
