I was innocently browsing a garage sale earlier this year when I came across a kodak retina camerea. I took it home, had it fixed up and then bought a yashica electro or two.

Now I want a rangefinder with lens options. I looked first at leicas of course, then nikons and then i came across canons.

They seem to have a fantastic ratio of price, quality and usability and I've found myself lusting after a P.

What's even more dangerous is that I'm going to Japan in 3 weeks. I don't know if I'll be able to resist.

How can I subdue these GAS urges?
 
You have 10 posts in the forums. That's twice as many as you need to know you are asking that question in the wrong place! :D :D
 
A Canon P, a 35/1.8, a 50/1.4 & a 100/2 are in your future...

No one escapes the GAS problem forever...

I have a nice Canon P for sale right now in our classified section. I included a very good FSU lens, 50mm/2.8 to get started with, and the bottom half of the leather case. Might be what you're looking for. If you want just the body, maybe we can work out a deal.

Well I'm not going to rush out and buy one today, but if I happen to be in Ginza and walk by a camera shop and ..............

At an end of an obscure stairway of a blunt building in west Shinjuku, there is this place called Shinjuku Camera Box that carries most Canon LTM bodies and lenses at quite reasonable price. Quality start from "B" to "AA." I get really dizzy whenever I go there.
It's near Map Camera, one of the largest used camera dealers in Japan and Camera market (Camera Ichiba), another used dealer. The three dealers plus Camera No Kimura at 10 min walk from there, makes a grand tour of West Shinjuku used camera stores. Ginza is only good for overpriced Leicas these days.
You will love it.
 
The Canon P is an excellent choice. It simpifies film loading, that is problematic for some with the earlier Barnack style Canon models, and is a beautiful, simple and functional design. For use, buy one that is fully functional, or plan on a good CLA to bring it up to spec. Don't worry too much about cosmetic appearance, as it will inevitably acquire marks and dings if being actually used to take pics.

I wouldn't spend the money to buy a near mint/mint body, for the above reasons. Those are pricey, and best left to collectors who put them inside glass cases. Your lens choices range from relatively inexpensive FSU choices, to such favorites as the Canon 50/1.8, 50/1.4, or my favorite, the 50/1.5. For a wide, I love the 50/2, and also the 28/3.5 for its tiny size and rugged construction. Since the bodies use the LTM, there is also an almost endless choice of other Makers lenses, in all price ranges and qualities.

You can put together a small kit that is just about perfect for street shooting for a moderate outlay of cash. That is practically impossible to do in other makes, especially Leica. Read through past threads here to find lots of discussion, and many valuable tips on both cameras and lenses. They will help make you a more knowledgable buyer, and also help to reduce costly mistakes on bad choices.

This is a different world, and one that will make your non-camera friends glassy eyed when you start talking about your latest new find. That's what makes this forum so valuable, it gives us a place to communicate with others like us...

There's a nice clean looking one right now in our classified ads section. It's not mine, I have already sold mine! But I kept one. I would not sell this last one I have, it's just that good. When I won't chance my Leica while I shoot in some marginal areas, I'll just bring the Canon. I can always afford a replacement if need be. And who would steal it? It's not a Leica. Just acts like one. But easier to use.

Oh- and for lenses? If you ever see a Canon 100/3.5 and happen to like shooting slightly long, pick this baby up! Super lens, very small and light and not over valued. Good for outside shooting or inside with a flash (gakkkk!). A little slow for indoors portraits without artificial lights (gakkkk!). - Sorry, there goes my gag reflex again, every time I mention ... errr, well, you know.

I was out shooting this afternoon w/ a Canon P and Canon 50/1.5, and a Leica M2 and Canon 35/2.8. Both camera bodies were and are a joy to use. With a 50 or a 100/3.5 on the P, I'm in heaven....
 
this Canon RF disease is viral. I am now on the look-out for a 28mm LTM lens. damn!!!

28-50-(100 ??) tempting.
 
I ended up buying a cheap(ish) leica m2 body but I'm now in Japan looking at lenses.
Yesterday in Yokohama I spotted a 50/1.4 for $200 which I'm considering buying.
There was a 35/1.8 for $300 but I'm wondering if I can get a better deal.

Lots of folks like the 35/1.8. but I'm no fan. You're better off with the 35/2.0 IMHO. If you find one, snatch it up, try it out and if you don't like it, I'll buy, as long as it's reasonably (read cheap) priced. !!!

The 50/1.4 is excellent, if you don't need the extra speed, you'd be VERY pleasantly surprised by the 50/1.8. Much cheaper still, but getting a better rep = higher prices, I noticed.

Boy is that camera box full. Glass cabinets all around, tiny corridoors through them, stuffed with cameras and lenses.

I didn't find anything I liked more than the 50mm 1.4 in Yokohama though, so I went back and bought that yesterday.

The salesman was really nice. They were out of the CV 50mm adapters at 4200 yen but he found a used one and gave me that, a large microfibre cloth, a minolta m rear cap (as well as front and rear non-original screw caps), clear filter and a 2009 nikon calendar for the total price of 20,000 yen. Nice.

That was at Yokohama camera onuki.

im as as well since its cheaper than one for the SLR (28/2 in minolta AF is not cheap)

but i need the finder first and have been having a hard time finding one in budget, such a small thing should not cost so much, seems i can find 35mm finder all day long but 28 oh no.

Picking up five films from yodobashi tomorrow, got another four in cameras still :)

No I don't normally travel with this many cameras but I bought the leica about a week before I left the US to return to NZ and then stumbled on a Nikon F3 for $15 and nobody could resist that.
