Help me justify DRF

But my thing is - I like my lenses. I like them as they are.... Since each lens in each FL has it's character, I'd be losing that on a DRF smaller sensor. And that's my biggest problem with small sensor DRFs.

lens character ...

The other thing that bothers me is dynamic range. I don't want 8bit/color
out of the box.

Just wait .... deeper sensors will become available, which will also get rid
of the crop factor for rangefinders (more bit depth allows for vignetting
correction). Let's wait and see what Nikon comes up with, and what the
M9 looks like ....

If you need us to justify it for you... you don't need it. Save your money until the one you really want is released.

Its your decision whether to buy an RD1 or an M8. If a camera meets your needs, and you can afford it, then get it. The crop factors of the RD1 & M8 are what they are, and are not going to change. Accept them or reject them. Use the Bill Clinton argument; "It's how you define what "is" is" when thinking about the crop factor.

Not to be mean, but this reminds me of the old line, "if we had some bacon we could have bacon and eggs -- if we had some eggs."

I'd like to Thank everyone for their input!
But I think I'm on the same page as Roland and several others here. As much as I want DRF, I think I"ll wait and see what develops. I hope they will come up with a full frame sensor DRF and that when I'll jump in. I don't really mind scanning. I just need to get a better scanner. And I still like to use some film cameras that I know for sure will not have a digital version. So, I guess it's film and scanning in RF world for me for now. But I think I'll pick up a DSLR if I find one cheap, so I have that option too.

If you're really interested in digital, it's not like the only choice you have is between some variety of expensive DRF and some variety of expensive DSLR. The so-called "prosumer" cameras are quite nice and are capable of things no DRF or DSLR can do, at least without expensive lenses or accessories.

The bottom line, though, really was stated by someone else above: if you need someone to talk you into buying gear, you probably don't really need it.

Could this be a little like looking at the Standard and thinking "if only it had an on-board rangefinder" then looking at a Model II and thinking "if only it had slow speeds" then looking at a Model III and thinking "if only...1/000th sec...flash sync...integrated vf/rf...integrated TTL metering..." 😉 At some point you're comfortable jumping...at some point you wait...it's a personal decision.
