help me with my summilux!

I just got myself a summilux pre-aspherical. it worked great for a couple days and I have been shooting it a ton. however, today it seems as if one of the screws fell out on the exterior closest to the rear element (by the aperture guide to foot/meter guide). Now, when i go to focus it, its all jammed up and is pretty much stuck on infinity.

this is annoying. i will go to nippon in manhattan tomorrow but until then can anyone let me know whats up?

These things can happen, even to a Leica lens. I don't know anything about Nippon. Is that a dealer, perhaps where you bought it? Or a repair place? If you bought it there and it's under warranty, I guess that is one thing. But personally, I would much rather send it to Sherry Krauter for a repair. That way, you know you have someone who knows what they are doing. Don't try to fix it yourself! And you should not try to turn the controls, as it is obviously jammed, and damage could easily result.

there is the picture of the missing screw. I am a student and i really don't want to wait for keh to get around to this thing and then send it back, but i guess i have to, right?... i see the tutorial but i also dont have that screw that fell out, so who knows if that has anything to do with the problem.

you know what, when i hold the front of the lens and focus everything goes back to normal, i need that screw and a good cla... i'll pop into one of the many repair shops in manhattan and get all fixed up tomorrow..

i would send it to an experienced repair person like DAG or Sherry Krauter. if you take it into a camera store, they will likely just jam a screw into it and make it worse.

mann i just got my m6 back from leica in nj, they did a great job but my goodness was it expensive. I have been living around manhattan for years and know plenty of professionals who get all their old gear cla'ed at specific shops that they trust. I mean, you don't survive for years not knowing how to do simple cla's and quick fixes in this era, right?

err, i don't know if i'd agree with that. i only suggested sending it off to DAG or Sherry because they really are the best at this. i think a lens cla is only $90 or so, so to me, it would be worth it to spend the extra cash.
sending it to leica would probably be just as good, but i'm sure they'll take as long as DAG will. Sherry is usually pretty quick so i've heard.

John, I'd just call Sherry or Don about the screw, and see if they can send it (or one of the camera repair shops that you can walk to). These lenses aren't that complicated, and if it was working before, I think you'll be able to do it yourself. The thing is brass and unless you are popping out the elements from the mount, there's not much you can do to bugger it.

If nothing else works - email Leica USA with a picture of the lens and the missing screw. They can most likely locate one - or at least tell you what size and thread it is. They are usually very good with stuff like that. Dont forget, today you might only be a customer for a used lens - but one day you might go for something new and expensive.
be sure when you install the screw that nothing has shifted in the lens. It
might not be a bad idea to have it checked by one of the Manhattan based service guys - just have it put on a collimator to see that everything is OK.
Both DAG and Sherry would take quite some time - and if it only a missing screw - it might be overkill.
