Dear RFF members (on a street in beautiful Verona typing this).

I've experienced something of a disaster. I've come to Italy to photograph Venice next week, and had a special project in mind, with a view to publishing in 'Blurb'.

I found I'd brought 3 lenses for the Contax G1, and left the body at home in Australia. I've also brought an M4P body and left all the lenses behind.

Any suggestions as to how I might bring myself back from the brink of disappointment? Is there a shop in Verona or Venice that I might hire equipment from - indeed any film camera would just about do at this stage.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Gary,

No way for me to help you, but have you tried posting on the LUF? A Leica meeting in Venice is happening within the next week, maybe someone on their way to the meeting can bring you a lens/body.

Good luck,
Tim

Ouch!
Here's a contact from 2006 - "and end up needing to buy film or, God forbid, a camera in Venice, then try Foto Aguiari at Strada Nova 4302 in Cannaregio (tel 522-4031), just across the Grand Canal from the Rialto Markets (if you take the gondola traghetto, you'll be practically on top of the store). Here you can buy Fuji consumer and professional film, a Canon EOS-5 body, or even a Rolleiflex. If they don't have what you need, ask for directions to another shop nearby."

Actually, I think that in the same circumstances I'd throw my RF "principles" out the window, go and buy a Panasonic LX3/LX5 or equivalent digital P&S and use that. The file image quality for a Blurb book will be more than adequate and you won't really compromise the outcome of what amounts to a "trip of a lifetime". And you won't spend half your holiday time trying to find a film camera that suits you.
A P&S may not feel ideal but it's a practical way to overcome a difficult but short term problem and you'll have the images you might otherwise miss out on. Sometimes life's a compromise! 🙂

You might try sending a private message to italy74 (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/member.php?u=19735). He seems pretty well informed and lives somewhere in the northern part of Italy.

I live in Milan, but know nothing about what's available in Verona. You might also consider having someone at home FedEx you what you left behind. If they mark with a value of under $50 and state that it's a gift, you won't get hit with customs tax. The delivery charge would be far less than buying adapters or a new camera.

If you can't get it sent to you in Verona, you could send it to me. You could come to Milan to get it. I'm only a couple of hours away by train. Or I could meet you there or somewhere in between. Just send me a private message if you want me to do that or something else.

I've already started to to throw my principles out the window. I have an LX3 with me, and will just dispense with the B & W prints I was thinking of....

Thanks for this wonderful offer. I'll not have time to take you up on it, but I really appreciate it.

Dear RFF members

Thank you for your rapid and very helpful replies. I have a couple of suggestions which I can follow up, and back in Oz I'll let the forum know what has transpired. Who knows, but I can assure you there will be some images come out of this. There's also been a good reminder what a fine forum this is.

thanks again

Just a thought: why not hunt down a camera shop and buy one of those little tripods or a bean bag to use with the P&S? It ought to bring out the best in the beast.

Regards, David

A quick email from Piazza Erbe at night - thanks for your suggestion. It's one more I can explore, and who knows what will come out of it.

Appreciate your training suggestion for the beast.
