Help needed - ND Filter for Summilux

Got it!

Got it!

The ND Filter just arrived from B&H...and it does not disappoint!

Put it on the lens, walked out on the back patio and bang! I can shoot pretty much anything at 1000 or less even at high noon around here, with the TriX set at 250.

So, tomorrow, Portra 160, rated at 100 and I should be just fine!:)

Why didn't I think of this before? Why didn't somebody tell me? They probably did but I wasn't listening....

The ND filter works perfectly well on the 80 Lux! All at f1.4 just before noon.

Portra 160 is due in next week...no one in Atlanta has Portra in stock! So, B&H to the rescue.

Will post some images from the Ektar 100 when I am finished with the roll. The ND filter should do fine and I am looking at how the colors work out.

I received yesterday the Vivitar Series 1 set of three filters for UV, ND8, and circular polarizer filters. They are multicoated HD filters. I got it online from a camera store in new condition.

Raid, how is your ND filter working out?

Hi Dave,
I haven't used it so far as I was using the 85/1.4 indoors, but the ND filter is in the camera bag for the situations where an ND filter is needed. I also was thinking "why didn't I do this earlier"?".

Hi,
I have not used an ND filter before but I recently bought a B+W 40mm ND4 filter for my Canon 50mm f1.5.
I normally use slow films Pan F+ and Velvia 50.
Will the ND4 be adequate to enable me to use f1.5 up to 1/1000 in reasonable sunlight conditions with these films and also Portra 160 or will I need a stronger ND value filter to use Portra 160?.

By using sunny 16, you should be able to figure it out. For example, in full sunlight with no clouds, you're looking at an aperture of f16 with a shutter speed of 1/iso, which in the case of your portra would be 1/160. Your ND filter will shave off two stops, but not sure it will be enough to get you down to f1.5 though..

My R4 only has 1/1000 shutter speed, nothing faster. Using the B+W filter I have (3 stops), everything works well at 100 iso. Nothing wrong with using Portra 160 at 100 from what everyone is saying...I will not get my Portra 160 until next week so when I try it, I will let you know my experience... but the numbers work!

Now, regarding your filter, I checked B&H photo but cannot find a B+W ND4 filter...how many stops is it rated?

For me, I had no choice but use the 85mm lens at 1.4 because the aperture blades are messed up, and I can only use the lens wide open. I was unable to use this lens in bright sunshine.

Dave,
I have used this lens often on a digital camera and indoors or in the open shade.

Here, there was hardly any sunlight.

The Olympus E-P2 M 4/3 camera allows me a 10X (or so) focusing aid for very critical focusing with the 85/1.4 wide open, and it has IS too.
