Hi a fellow member of summilux.net (french leica association) offered a deal on his 50mm summarit. It is in immaculate condition without a single cleaning mark and free from haze. He paid 490€ for it on ebay. He want to trade it with my radioactive summicron plus some money. What do you think?

A fine lens for it`s time. Fairly sharp in center at 1.5, going soft to the corners. Beautiful bokeh.

You will need a lens shade and maybe a UV filter which I normally do not use, but the coatings are very very soft. I avoid cleaning mine.

Some find the contrast low, I do not. The fogging inside most will kill the Leica fingerprint and contrast, but your will be clean so don`t worry.

Your cron is sharp stopped down, but worthless for color if the inside has gone yellow/brown. Exposure to UV might fix it, how permanently I don`t know.

I think my Summarit is sharper than the collapsibe I had at 2.0.

actually he wants me to fill the cash! 150 euros he asked. My summicron has a little play i read its normal... But my cron does have haze. Also I did recoated the front lens on the cron.

He said his summarit was pristine, no haze, no scratche original coating...

I think I won't trade but he proposed me to try his summarit. I may love or not...
But has I have another summicron from 1969, this one sees not much use unless compactness is asked. And I want a summilux for its speed.

I read a lot about the softness of the summarit but he said his specimen was very sharp, Im like Thomas, must see to believe!

If it sharp enough for me, I won't need the summilux and this will be my fast 50mm.

try the Summarit if you can, and then decide if it is to your taste.
the Summarit is not for everyone.

Seeing from the leica M porn thread I think it may be a little big on the size side for my taste. But hey appart from the 35 lux and the 40 nokton, is there a compact fast 50 lens out there, I think not.

the new 50/1.5 Zeiss Sonnar C is fairly compact.
so is a Jupiter 3 and the Canon 50/1.5

This is a great lens (depending on condition), Bob.

US 250 - 300, typically. KEH has one at the moment

Roland.

I should consider the canons... Maybe even a 50mm 1.2, as I have a 2.0 going real fast should be more clever... anyone here can lead me to a shot of the canon 1.2 on a leica M?

Easy, this one.

Cheers,

Looking at the nice pictures provided by Brian and Roland, I think I would avoid those very nice indeed canon lens. I read that the 50 1.5 canon is not that great for my taste so I might end up with the summarit wich look quite thin but long.
After some reflection, as I use color filter in B&W, I will skip the summarit because I am already equiped in 39mm filters wich fits my summicron and elmar 90. I will ask the summilux.net moderator who offered the trade if he has a summaron 2.8 or the likes because my jupiter 12 wich is very fine and sharp has 40.5mm thread!

I like it very much, even with the yelloing I like the rendition in color slides with astia. It is just that I have another summicron from 1969 black without tab that is sharper wide open and with a lot more contrast wide open wich is nice to have even if the fingerprint of the hazy summicron is 'summarit like'. All in all stopped down appart from the slight color deviation, those two lens are exactly the same!

I must say your shot is gorgeous! If all the canon 1.5 are like this, I might wanna get one of these! You didn't sharpen the scan? Is it a neg scan or a print?

This is what it does, edodo. Creates very 3D-like images - the Canon 50/1.5 is a great lens. Here is one of mine:

Originally on Superia, I believe, moved to B+W in PS.

Roland.

I remember seing the secon shot you just posted before. I thought it was masterful, really like the candid expression, the little over exposed skin and the very creamy bokey, a very very very nice shot! I bet you did not use a built in meter for that shot IMHO. Ok if this canon 1.5 has 39mm I'm in hunt!
