Hi guys hope you can help me this is driving me mad :bang:. My rewind crank on my bessa r2 keeps locking stopping me from winding on. I have discovered that if i raise the crank from its bed the shaft spins ok and i can wind on. So this has led me to realise that the little screw on top seems to be tightening down to prevent the rewind shaft spinning independently of the crank handle bit. Please help as i dont know what i am doing if anything to cause this. If i loosen the screw it works fine. Im not sure how this is tightening up. Thanks chaps.

The closest I've ever come to this is the rewind crank falling off because the screw came out. I was lucky to find the pieces, occurred at the Smithsonian.

Some of the screws are reverse-threaded. Is there any chance the screw is out too far, screwed in so far the shaft has been overdriven?

The only other explanation i can think of is the shaft is bent.

I just loocked at mine- the screw with the red dot must spin with the shaft, and allow the lever to stay in place. If there is not enough clearance for the lever in the collapsed position to allow the shaft to turn freely, a jam might occur. I would look for dirt, foreign objects, or the screw with the red dot being over-tightened. This could cause a jam.

Report back, and PM me if necessary. I missed this post. I have a Bessa R2 like yours.

Saw your post on Photo.net.

Also check that the rewind lever is folding flat into place. If it is crooked, maybe an edge is interfering with the notches in the shaft that are used to engage the lever when it is in the ready-for-use position. The shaft mechanism has two slots in it that the lever flips into place and engages. If somehow it is not lying flat when folded, something could hang on it. Make sure the screws on each side of the lever that hold it in place are tightened.

This is not easy to visualize without having the errant camera in front of you.

Hi Thanks for you reply, Yeah its a weird one alright like you said the red dot should spin when advancing the frame ive tightened the screw a bit not too much its spinning with no flim in it ok if i manually spin the crank post with the back open. ill have to stick another film in and see what happens is there some thing special i should do when i load it up, i may be missing something but i doubt it

Nothing special to be done, loads like any normal camera. The only thing that is different about the design is the "clutch" (slots and the tabs on the lever) that engages when it is in the open position, to rewind the film. I could see how the lever hanging up on those slots when the lever is closed could cause that condition. If backing off the screw with the red dot "slightly" makes the problem go away, then I suspect that it is clamping down on the lever. Somehow, it is going in too far. I would have to take the mechanism apart to go farther, but is there any kind of spacer that holds the screw with the red dot from being overtightened?

i agree with everything youre saying ive had the crew out and theres no spacer but im wondering if during the rewinding of a used film that, as that can be quite shall we say agricultural on the r2 that maybe the force of it is tightening everthing up some how any hoo soon as i get another film ill give it a go, thanks again for your time.

It might be possible- rewinding the film could cause the screw to overtighten.

This has never happened on mine. It could be that the screw on your camera is not stopping at the proper distance to leave the clearance for the lever.

I'm sorry that I missed this post originally. It's an odd problem.

just to let you know have run another film through and its fine, reckon we will never know, thanks again for your time.
