Help - Price for a defective M2

Hi there!

A friend of mine wants to sell a Leica M2 and asked me if I wanted it.. He doesnt know a thing about rangefinders (it was from his father) so I went to see the camera looking for a good deal, and the camera is in good shape, shutter speeds seem fine, leatherette is full, no chips or dings just some small scratches.
Why didnt I take it?
I see no rangefinder patch 🙁 Viewfinder is clear, but i can only see rangefinder patch if I put a finger on the viewfinder... (so it is very faint and seems somewhat "out of focus")

I dont have $ to repair it, neither my friend so this will go to ebay.. My question is:

What price should he expect from a Leica M2 in such condition?

If the rangefinder is as bad as you say I would suspect that $300.00 - $400.00 is possible allowing for the description you have given of the general cosmetics. Maybe more ... you never know with eBay! 🙂

I'd check first with some of the camera dealers, see whether there is a dealer out there who are willing to give you a good price on the camera, have it repaired in-store and sell it on for more.

That may get you as much money as simply selling it on ebay

Peter at CRR can mend broken finders. Prices from the link below but he won't be able to do it for some time. This may give you an idea how much to expect knocked off the price.

So it goes to eBay? I hope it will be described accordingly and not just dumped as "it's my father's camera and all appears to be fine"...

Thanks for the fast answers... I tried to talk him that repairing would give him a greater value.. but since there are no Leica repair people here in Portugal, and since he is not really interested in keeping the camera, I guess he'll sell it that way.
