HELP. SD Card cannot be opened

ZAR isn't about fixing the drive, it should have prompted you where you wanted it to copy the recovered photos to a folder on your hard drive. Follow the directions on that page.

Recovery software doesn't typically write to the SD card to avoid making things worse and/or overwriting any files. Partition repair software would be needed to try and fix the drive without loosing files. But if you recover all the files using another program you can then just format the drive and start from scratch with it.

Perhaps try downloading a bootable Linux ISO onto a CD or DVD then using that as the OS to look for your files. I recovered almost a terabyte of images from an external mechanical drive without a hitch. I just used a simple utility that was packed with the OS. That was after a few days of stressing what happened to the images.

Thanks, Phil. I need first to understand how/where to download a bootable Linux ISO. I will tomorrow ask some friend at ITS to help me with it all.

Raid, if PC Inspector Smart Recovery (my above post) doesn't work you can try PC Inspector File Recovery from the same software maker which rather deals with system errors (damaged card controller) than just corrupt or damaged files errors :

http://www.pcinspector.de/default.htm?language=1

When I place the card into my M8, it says "card is full".

This is encouraging because the M8 recognizes the card and its content. So, put the card in the M8 and connect the M8 to the PC with the USB wire. Then display the card volume on your PC screen and just use Windows to launch a volume scan and a defragmentation of the card with the card still in the M8 and the M8 switched on in reading mode. The card is full so the defrag won't do wonders but it may at least delete nasty corrupt bytes.

Once done, switch the M8 off, take the card off it and put it in your PC card reader unit.

Once the card slotted in your PC card reader unit, have PC Inspector File Recovery recover the card content. Then you may see a huge number of files with a .CHK extension name coming up.

If it happens, save a few of those files on your HD and try to manually change one or two of these *.CHK files names into *.JPG files by just basically renaming the files, and see what happens. You may end up with your images opening normally then... So saving all those *.CHK files and renaming them as *.JPG files could make your day.

If everything fails there is a company in Germany which has specialized into this and which you can send your SD card to, their frontpage explains quite well what's mostly wrong and what they will do :

Not cheap, but it all depends on how valuable your photos are for you.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Sorry to read this Raid, hope you manage it in one way or the other. I'm not expert enough to suggest you anything special but you already have navy suggestions.

Are files in DNG or JPEG format?

Can you see the file names when connecting your camera to PC?

What software on your computer are you using?

Could your SD card capacity be too large for your reader.

Have another system you could try using to dump the files from the card?

Hope you get the card working. Don’t give up.

I tried using maybe 7 software types until "out of the blue" the SD card turned into a DCIM 100LEICA card with access to all images.
Thanks to everybody for the tips and the encouragements.

That's good news. We can all sleep at night now...

Just read your previous post about not having the USB cord. I don't know what the situation in your country is but a lot of shops accumulate them by the ton and will give them away if asked nicely.

It worked out well, and that card included some nice looking images that would have been lost. The key to opening the locked card may have been the repeated scans by more than one software. Some corrupted images may have been deleted that way.

Isn't it a special Leica cord?

The card had images from the M9 with the 35mm Lux. I mostly used the M8 with the Hologon or the phone. I like images with the Lux. The lens is a very good lens, Robert.
Still, I always took extra shots with the phone or with the M8. When it was dark, I set aside the Hologon with its f 16 fixed aperture (with the filter).
