So I unpackaged my Coolscan V ED today to immense anticipation and loaded up my first strip of film when... I realized just how scratched all my film was! Atleast PS's "Heal" brush does wonders...

A more pressing matter, however, is a mysterious white artifact on the edge of all my scanned images (see bottom of attached photo 1). I'm quite sure that it's caused by this extra piece of plastic (see attached photo 2), but I'm not sure how to go abouts removing the plastic--do I just break it off and hope for the best?
Fortunately the white spot doesn't kill off my pictures entirely, but it does can some creative cropping...:bang:

Thanks,
Erik

I haven't tried using the slide-holder as I have no slides, so I can't rule out something wrong inside the scanner itself...

edit: the pictures didn't work, they do now

I have the same scanner and that should not be there. I think you could slice it off with a sharp utility knife. BUT, i would call Nikon frst to see if they can send a replacement.

Just cutting it off sounds like the best idea, I'm really not willing to haggle with Nikon for them to send me a $0.50 piece of plastic that I almost already have...
