So if I want to sync my vivitar 285 via pc cord to my S2 I just set the flash dial and shutter speed dial both to "x" and adjust my aperture and flash power accordingly to the lighting situation? Am I right? Will the flash sync properly if the flash dial is set to x but I adjust my shutter speeds?
If both are set to "x" what is the shutterspeed? 1/60??

"X" setting and shutter speed 1/60 or below, and then the rest is correct. I think the 285 has auto settings too. So you can use it indoor on the recommended F/stop and walk around the room and focus and shoot.
Sometimes you can get some background with using a lower shutter speed. As the flash is the shutter speed for the subject, people in the background can move but you really don't care. I've use 1/30 and 1/15; even 1/4 to 'lift' the background so you don't have all backness behind the subject.
Auto (or manual) setting used for fill is possible too, but with a focal plane shutter it is really hard.

"X" setting for the flash dial and "X" or "30" setting for the high speeds dial and "30" setting for the slow speeds dial.
Shutter speed of 1/60 is not correct with an electronic flash according to the Nikon S2 user's manual.
I guess the shutter speed of "X" might be 1/40 or 1/50.
So, any other speed slower than "X" will work too.

electronic flash -- both shutter speed dial at x and dial under rewind at x --- speed is1/50 second set at x .
both dials must be at x .
have not tried slower speed sync - would probably work as the flash fires when the first curtain hits wide open

With all focal plane shutters there is a max. shutter speed for electronic flash sync. but no min. shutter speed, so here all speeds equal to or lower than "X" will work. Even "B" will do it (for the so-called "open flash" technique).
