Hello everyone!

I have bitten the bullet and bought a leica M6 from a fellow RFF'r which is now in transit to my house. My friendly local drugstore camera shop manager has a couple of lenses to sale me to help me get started. He said he wants to sale them for about twenty percent below market (e-bay) value to me. I am going to research prices a bit as will he, we will compare prices we find and then we will strike a deal.

My immediate inclination was to post here and get some advise from what I have grown to accept as the market specialists. If you could tell me what the lens would sale for (estimate of course) it will help me out alot.

I also invite any tid-bits of info on these lens's such as good or bad points and especially anything that will make me fill good about them. (tall tales of legendary glow or how the lens told the future in "hitchcock presents" and what not:D).

Here are the lenses:

1: Summitar F=5cm 1:2- 1:16 (collapsible)

Serial number: 663110

Original cap

The scale was in feet. (I certainly do not know if this matters.)

notes: The glass was fine and dandy. It was clear of any haze or fog. There were light cleaning marks on the front element but no scratches or anything that would effect quality of image. There were some very light marks on the outside of the barrel from collapsing but not any bad ones or signs of abuse. The aperture blades showed no signs of oil and the aperture changed very smoothly and easily. I have no camera to mount them to, but the threads looked to be in good shape.

Oh yeah, will the collapsible work on my M6?

2: Elmar f=3.5cm 1:3.5-18

Serial number:694295

original cap

notes: The glass was clean. I could not see any signs of separation, fog or hazing on the lens. It was not as easy to see the glass being so small but there were some very light cleaning marks on the front element. The min thing that stuck out to me about this lens was that the aperture was very stiff. It would change to all positions and did so smoothly without slipping or notchy feelings, but it took quite a bit of force to move it.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and any advice you can offer as to price or other. I have to go to class now but I will check back throughout the day and answer any questions I can.

Sorry if I come off real cheesy but I am pretty damn excited right now!

Robby

P.S. Would the cameraquest adapters work fine on these lenses and my M6?

The CQ adapters will work, and the Summitar will work (though you must use a hood with it). The Elmar 35/3.5 was superseded by the much better Summaron. I'd advise you to do a search on RFF: much has already been said.

The Summitar can be safely collapsed. I have a coated Summitar, and it is quite nice for the "older look".

The Elmar 3.5cm F3.5 is probably best stopped down to F8. The Summaron is much sharper. IF it is a good price, I'd go for it. If it is close in price to a Summaron, grab the latter.

I have a Summitar and it is a very good lens. I would recommend it. I have never used the 35mm Elmar, but have never heard any compliments on it. I would pass on that one if I were you. I have used the Summitar successfully without a hood, but have also used it with a slip-on adapter and Series VI filters and hood. I feel that the original barn-door hood for the Summitar is overkill.

Thanks for the replies!

Thanks for the replies!

My main object in posting was to come up with a price on what they generally go for. Since ebay no longer has a feature to let you see how much similar auctions have ended at recently I was hoping some body here could give me a ballpark price on what each lens has been selling for on ebay. So if anyone knows that info it would help me out on what I should offer him.

I plan on looking for the adapter to use the hood recommended for the 50. I will have to think about the 35.

thanks again,
Rob

Rob,
Regarding the Summitar, you should expect to pay around $150. Keep in mind that to have a lens cleaned by DAG or Sherry Krauter will be about $90-$100.

Thanks LTF. I am buying that lens. My camera will be here tomorrow or monday and these are the only lenses I have access to start shooting with. I think I am going to go ahead and order both 35 and 50 adapters from CQ even though I only need the 50 right now, because I am sure I will need a 35 as I collect these older (affordable) lenses.

Actually the option is still there. Do your search and then check the "Completed Listings" option in the "Search Options" box on the left of the page. You'll need to log in to use this feature.

Help with Summitar 5/2 and Elmar 3.5/3.5 (please)

I agree with most of the comments...

Assumming that you would like to buy both lenses, you might bring $225 in cash with you and offer him that amount for both but after inspecting them closely with a flashlight looking through the barrel to make sure they are pretty clean...

no more than $100 for the Elmar and $125 for the Summitar...or, if you can't get it for $125, $150 tops for the Summitar... The Leica screw-mount to Bayonet-mount adapters for your Leica M will cost roughly $60 or more each... You might ask if he has the caps, the filters, etc...He may have them and throw them in...

By the way, I changed my avatar to show my latest acquisition, a IIIG with a Summicron collapsible... I have several Summicrons and may unload the lens because an interior element looks cloudy...

What is without doubt the best is hardly "overkill", Jim. I had a SOOPD for my Summitar, now I have a SOOFM for my Summicron. Name any other hood which springs open in such an exciting way. It doesn't go "TWANNGG", but so what?
