I hope I'm missing something on the BW settings.
I can see little/no difference between the yellow filter/red filter pictures !!?
Can find no way to increase the filter effect, the highlight tone and shadow tone (-2 to +2) look very interesting but nothing like a dSLR setting to increase/decrease the intensity of the filter (or color also).
The filter effect is extremely subtle, nothing like a real filter, the red filter on a film camera is dramatic compared to a yellow filter.
Same for color, you get provia, velvia, astia with no change for intensity
Sure hope I've missed something, have studied the manual a lot
Anyone having this problem?

Are you shooting in RAW mode only or are you shooting in jpg?

I am shooting jpeg.
Some color change is coming thru (color -2....+2) - it is subtle, nothing like a dSLR, not complaining as i never liked the stupid bright colors you get with a dSLR.

The minor differences from BW w/yel, red, green is troubling.
With my film cameras I seldom use yellow as it makes so little difference, really like orange and red.

I thought I would be able to ramp up the effect of the red to come close to a dark red...but the red is very little different from the yellow.

I really do like this camera, love the Q buttom, the Fn, the menus are not excessive like the dSLR's, easy to find stuff.

So my big question is how do you get the effects of a red filter (like a film camera) ??
Outside the Highlight Tone / Shadow Tone - is there any other way to get some difference in these b/w filter effects?

If you use Photoshop, try looking at the three channels, one by one. If you find a look you like you can jetison the other two channels.

What do you mean by channels?

Also if I am not missing something (meaning there is precious little diff from red-yellow-green) then does this mean that if I want the effects of a red/green filter - you have to do it in PS?
If the above is true then why put the filter effects in the camera ??
You could take any pic and give it a filter effect in PS...

I don't mean this in a snarky way at all, but if the filter sims don't wow you, why not just get an actual red filter and shoot in standard B&W mode? Or shoot in color and use the B&W mode in an app like Lightroom, where you can adjust each color channel individually for all kinds of interesting tonal effects.

mabelsound, I will try that.
I almost added a reply here earlier about putting a real red filter on, but then thought - can't do that cuz a digital camera would account for it with maybe weird results. So I was glad I didn't put it out and everyone would know what a dumb nubie I am.

It's not that I don't like the simulations, it's the fact that there is very little diff when you shoot with a filter - and no way to increase the filter effects eg -2 to +2, like you can with color.

It has been my experience that the color filters in B&W JPEG mode on the X-Pro 1 only seem to affect skin tones, not skies. The dramatic differences you get with Tri-X and color filters are not faithfully reproduced here. I no longer use in-camera B&W. I'm waiting for Adobe to get ACR up and running as I love the results I can get from it. In the mean time I'm using Elements to tweak colored JPEG files.

Too bad, really.
