I have a nice black Summicron 35mm f2 (ver IV) that has not seen too much use. Recently, I noticed that the front half of the lens (in front of the focus ring, is getting a noticeable wobble that seems to be getting worse.

Is this typical, and is it an easy fix?

This happened to the v4 that I had. I believe my case was due to uneven wear on the helix from upward pressure on the tab when focusing. IMO a bad design. I had a worn helix on my tabbed 80's 50 summicron also. The end result was sticking at 3ft. My 35 was so bad it would slop around in the mount when I shook it.

The front section of the fourth Summicron is glued in place unlike other Leica lenses which have set screws. I have had mine come loose when I tried to unscrew a tight filter. Send it to any reputable repair shop such as DAG or Sherry.

The lens group is held to the mount by a large nut that's sealed with glue at the factory. It appears the glue breaks down with age and the nut backs off.

If you're handy, you can remove the lens mount and tighten the nut with a spanner. Check the archives, as there are many posts on this subject, too.

Thanks guys - I'm off to search the archives. Depending on how scary it looks, I may send it to Sherry.
