Henri Cartier-Bresson: 95 Images Highlighting 6 Decades Up for Auction

A collection of 95 Henri Cartier-Bresson images were listed for auction at Sotheby’s today. The collection, which will also be on display for public viewing until December 16, includes both some of his more popular documentary work as well as some of his lesser-known portraits.

The images are from the collection of Peter Fetterman, a gallerist and collector, as well as a friend of Cartier-Bresson. Sotheby’s says that Fetterman obtained most of the images from the photographer himself. Along with the public auction from Dec. 9-16, the images will be available for viewing at the Sotheby’s York Avenue gallery in New York City.

The auction just passed but some of these images I have never seen before.

The World of Henri Cartier-Bresson: Photographs from the Personal Collection of Peter Fetterman

This December, Sotheby’s New York is delighted to present The World of Henri Cartier-Bresson: Photographs from the Personal Collection of Peter Fetterman. Highlighting six decades of Henri Cartier-Bresson’s impressive oeuvre, the 95 photographs featured in this auction include beloved images such as Behind the Gare Saint Lazare, Paris; Hyères, France; and Siphnos, Greece, among many others. Cartier-Bresson’s passion for photography was cemented in 1932 when he acquired a 35mm Leica, the handheld camera that revolutionized twentieth-century photography and freed him to photograph spontaneously anytime, anywhere. This manner of photographing ‘on the sly’ – his first book was called Images à la sauvette (1952), which roughly translates to ‘images on the sly’ – would become his trademark. For the rest of his illustrious career Cartier-Bresson traveled the world, making images that would leave an indelible mark on the history of photography.

Interesting to see the ones that went for $20k plus. Great photographs. Some seem not have sold.

An interesting one (#16) is a 1929 pseudo-circus-mirror selfie which he appears to be using a flat-bed folder?

And it appears this one fetched the most - #82 ($37,800 USD). Again, I never seen this image. It is beautiful.
