Herd or Non-Herd?

Herd or Non-Herd?

I'm a maverick. Just like Sarah Palin and John McCain. A team of mavericks.

Oh wait a minute, John McCain never actually identified himself as a maverick.

After all the years on RFF where we've started buying stampedes, I have to say we're more "OOOHhhh, Pretty Shiny Thing. Me Want."

Canon 50/1.5, Sonnar, even the J-3.

Not sure if herd mentality describes it.

Everyone can be an individual, with specific traits. Sometimes things are good, and lots of individuals follow that route. Sometimes- it's a trend and people adopt it for no good reason. That is where they forget their individuality.

"You are unique. Just like everyone else."

But I can't help feeling that the internet promotes virtual herds. Who all too often try to exclude 'others'. 'Others' can then be be more and more broadly defined (and excluded). Here's a hierarchy, with an ever more closely defined circle of The Chosen:

Anyone who doesn't even know what a rangefinder camera is.
Anyone who knows, but doesn't care.
Anyone who cares about rangefinders.
Anyone who doesn't love Leicas (excluding other rangefinders).
Anyone who doesn't love screw-mount Leicas (thereby excluding M-mount)
Anyone who doesn't love fixed-lens (pre-1931) Leicas...

Substitute FSU, Canon, Nikon, M-mount, M8/8.2/9, etc., for Leica screw mount, to taste.

Cheers,

R.

Last week Nikki broke the news to me that I was not living in the 21st century, I was living in the 20th, maybe the 19th. No Iphone, no Ipad, and I use funny looking cameras not like the ones her friends parents use. All I could say was Iphones and Ipads were boring, I've wired four LASERS at once into the printer port of my DOS computer, and I like the pictures that I get from my old cameras. She liked the LASER part.

Well, being something of a self professed expert on herds, I am miffed that nobody contacted me for my expert input. Therefore, I will not comment. :D

Well, since you insist, if I am around like people, I guess I will have no problem joining with them. At any point they deviate from what I think correct (or I change my thinking of correctness), I have no problem moving away from them. Place me where you will.

As to cameras and photography, I use whatever type of camera suits me at the moment. That will normally be film. It may be SLR (often), or RF (35mm, MF, or LF). Sometimes I find it convenient to use a small P&S digital. As someone already commented, I think that is true for a lot of folks here at RF. Again, put me were you will, and I wlll be where I want to be.

Is the man who marches to the beat of a different drummer than the other 999 people in the parade a "herd" or "non-herd" person?

Does your answer depend on if you are one of the other 999 people or if you are one of the millions that did not even care that there was a parade?

I herd you were around somewhere! Glad you showed up. I have been meaning to ask the story behind your handle. I have always liked it!

Maybe I should leave you and others guessing. I am sure you and others have much more romantic explanations than the simple truth. :p

But in fact, in a thread some time back on handles, I owned up that it has to do with a unit I am proud to have served in during my first two years in Vietnam.
