The whole TLR thing has really turned me back onto "retro" (i.e. no internal meter) shooting :)

I've been mulling over getting back into a nice Leica IIIc (or IIIf) and a few LTM lenses along with an M2.

On the other side of the coin, I'm thinking of selling my M7 and my 75mm Summilux (coded for M8).

Am I being nutty doing this? :)

Cheers,
Dave

P.S. This thread is dedicated to Joe :D

I respect your work, and I have often agreed with your opinions, Dave.
Don't take it personally: re-read the above.
But...yes..nutty would be a word which comes to mind..
BUT a man need be happy, so, go with God....

Selling a 75/1.4 ? You must be nuts .... :p;)

Sell something else and buy additionally an M2 for your M7. Or, sell your M7 and buy an M4-P, which has 75mm frame-lines and works quite well with the 75/1.4 (ask Roland - ferider-) :)

Point taken Michael :)

Are you talking about the sale of the Lux or the switch "backwards in time" (i.e. M7 to M2) or both? :D

Cheers,
Dave

Thanks Gabor :)

Ok.. so .. selling the lens that is not made anymore currently would be "crazy" I guess.

Something's gotta give - I guess I should force myself to use the M7 more - the TLR has got me in its grasp right now and I really should use the M7.... *sigh* - I am well aware there are more important decisions being made by those a LOT less fortunate than I am - I have not lost sight of that - but this is a bit frustrating to me.

Cheers,
Dave

clearly, you look to me a a mentor...

buy the canon p/50 that is in the classifieds now and use it when these sort of fits hit again.

I missed film after dumping my M4 and M6 earlier this year to pay for an M8. I love the M8, but I just got an M2 today. Very happy about it. I'm sure I'll feel differently when I process my first overexposed roll, but life is short so why not. Now, I just have to get my Sekonic Studio 398 repaired (I dropped it about 25 yrs ago; still seems to work okay, but the rotating head is cracked and missing a chunk) or buy batteries for my Minolta Auto III something other or relearn how to shoot meterless. Need some sun to make sunny 16 easier.

Dave, imho, your work is really nice. Don't ditch anything; just buy the M2.

If you are not using the 75 lux enough then you should sell it, regardless of how fantastic a lens (we all know is).

I totally understand where you are coming from... I also traded my M7s for M3s and love doing all my work with them (I still have an MP, though for the times I want to shoot a 35mm).

The M2 will be a great choice and you can put the extra money left from the sale of the M7 into new film :D

I don't know about the IIIc or IIIf, I never got comfortable with the vf from the screwmounts but if you like them, go for it... Oh, and a TLR will be perfect to round up this kit.

Cheers my friend!

Hmmm.

How about trading that 75mm Summilux to me, and I'll give you an almost mint Leica IIIg, 50mm f1.4 collapsible LTM and cash?

....Vick

Oh Vick.. that IS tempting :)

I guess the 75 is a tough one - I'll mull this over whilst down south for the next week - Like Riccis has said, I just don't use it "enough" - I find myself reaching for the 50 Lux (pre-Asph) more often than not.

Oh.. and as for the TLR - it's a Rollei 3.5 T - which I'm in love with currently - well.. you know.. not "in love with" but.. ya.. I like it a lot :D

Cheers,
Dave

Think it over, Dave. I'm taking a field trip to Toronto this weekend.

I'm tempting fate, but if you were to sell that 75 Summilux for cash, what would you want? And by the way, what condition is it in?

Reason I ask is that I've always always regretting selling anything Leica. I invariably "buy it back" and often have to pay more.

regards
Vick

Dave, the M7 is a *fine* camera. :) When switched to manual mode it has less distracting LEDs in the VF than the M6 / M6TTL / MP and you can always get back to AE mode if lazy.

Some month ago I was actually thinking about selling my 35mm Summilux pre-ASPH and getting the ASPH version ... The only reason for this was the stupid 12504 round-shaped hood that makes the lens look like a trumpet mounted in front of a camera. It was the only way to mount a protecting filter and didn't prevent from flare at all.

Then I came across the tip to mount a rectangular hood from the Summicron ASPH and to hack that hood to use E39 filters.... It was cheap to get the parts, modification was easy and I started to use that lens more and more. :)

Dave:
I am speaking of the sale of the 75/1.4.
I would LOVE to have one of those myself, and haven't had the ...stones...to spend the money.
DON'T YOU DARE LET THAT GO!!!

Besides, the M& is primo: I was shooting mine all day!
Had a day or two off from the hospital (birthdy number 52 is tomorrow) and spent it in the field...
M8 and M7.
NICE DAY.

Well.. if anything.. this helps me decide on what film camera to take with me down south - I'll be "forced" to using the M7 if that's the only thing I take :)

Cheers,
Dave

Dave - before you sell of the M7 and 75, consider borrowing a IIIf/c and a LTM lens, use it for a couple of weeks and you'll probably wonder where's the mystique... squinty viewfinders and PIA to load... if not, then sell what you don't use...

if you want to go manual, take the batteries out of the M7

I sold my 75 Summilux as too big and heavy to carry around everyday unless your name is Arnold. As for the 35 Summlux ASPH (Gabor) the lens shade intrudes heavily into the VF. I never thought Id sell my MP and keep the M7; change happens.

Dave, I don't have much specific input, but when I'm faced with a decision doesn't come easily, I try to just "sit with it". Not think it through, just put it out of mind and let the answer percolate up ... in its time.

That's quite zen of you Earl :)

Thanks for that :)
