I can't figure this our: My Hexar AF vignette/clips corners at certain distances/f-stops...both f-stop and distance seem to be involved, but owing to the, um, nature of Hexar AF, I don't know what f-stops are involved.

Details: built-in hood extended and (risk factor) thin Heliopan UV filter.

Surely a mere skinny Heliopan's not at fault?

Is hood/shade vignetting a known sometimes-issue for Hexar AF?

The AF needs filters with very little inwards (thread side) material unless the optional shim is used. With a stock filter, the lens may even bump up against a filter in AF mode close up.

The lens is also thought to be a W-Nikkor derivative, and not corrected for wide open f2 shots the way newer lens are, this is sometimes considered a benefit.

I'd use "A" mode, and try different apertures without the filter to know the exact aperture you are using.

With the AF-Hexar, it's most likely that vignetting occurs when focused at infinity. The lens sits closest to the film plane then, which means that field of view is largest, and the lens sits deepest inside the outer barrel. I wouldn't be surprised if the design is such that the barrel doesn't show by a hair under this condition. If you now add a filter, its rim may show up in the corners of the image..
