Hexar AF date back

My project for tomorrow will be to see whether I can make the date back work on my Hexar AF. I have not been able to do so in the past.

Does anyone know if there is some trick? The instruction manual (and I use the term advisedly) implies that if the display says "-- -- --" then nothing is recorded but that otherwise the MODE button on the back will select one of several different time/date formats.

I have had that display on the back before but nothing seemed to be recorded on the film. So:

1. WHERE exactly on the film are the date and time supposed to be recorded?

2. Is there some extra undocumented Hexar charm that turns the actual recording off and on?

Thanks in advance if anyone else has run into this and can explain. I'm not sure what such a feature is doing on a professional-type camera, but there it is, and my curiosity has the better of me.

Oh I hate those things... they add a 1/4 inch of depth for no good purpose whatsoever!

True enough, Frank. Funny thing is, I had one, and was told by a Konica rep that only a relative handful of the things ever made it into the States, making that version of the Hex AF (black/"stealth"/date back) rather rare. I'd have much preferred the plain-back version, but this was all I could find new at the time (around 1995-6...the Hex AF was always somewhat thin on the ground in terms of shops actually stocking the things).

I'd help sort this problem out, but I never actually used the data back in all the time I had the camera. Used the camera a lot, though. 🙂

My Silver AF had a date back. Now FrankS has it. Is it rare too?

My Hexar Silver has the date back; I thought they all came so-equipped.
I bought mine used from a forum member.

No. The Hexar Silver version with date back is most common. It was the the original Hexar black with date back that is rare.

I've never used the function on mine myself. (I have one of the original black ones.). I always assumed the date appeared on the picture itself, as with a point and shoot camera, but if that's not so then I have no idea. Maybe yours isn't working right? My instruction book is filed away somewhere so I'm not much help, I'm afraid.
